If You Cannot Afford One, A Lawyer Will Be Appointed

Never Mind the Two Houses, Leased Mercedes and $100K Salary

WHITE PLAINS — A former Yonkers councilwoman charged with taking $166,000 in bribes for her vote on key city projects told a federal judge this afternoon she could not afford to hire a lawyer.

Although she owns two homes, leases a Mercedes-Benz and earns nearly $100,000 a year, Sandy Annabi asked for a court-appointed lawyer. Chief Magistrate Judge George Yanthis granted her request in part - Annabi will be represented by federal public defender Suzanne Brody but will have to pay the reduced rate the government provides beginning in three months.

Well, if she didn't try to own two homes (in NY) and lease a Benz on $100k per year she wouldn't need to take bribes or use a public defender. There is something to be said for living within your means.

Poor judgement is equal opportunity when it comes to political affiliation, unfortunately.

Graft knows no political boundry. However, leave it to the few here that only see opportunities for partisan bashing.

Where was this judge when I needed a lawyer. I was only making 18k, but that was too much for a public defender. How freaking nice.

You seem to be on a rich bashing binge. Are you also rich?

LOL, someone trying to live that lifestyle in NY on $100k is very, very far from rich. This is someone who can afford to own one house and drive a used Honda if they are only living on their salary.

Really? I have a very good friend living in Yonkers, and a $100K for a single girl is "rich" if you ask me and him. Have you visited Yonkers ever? Would MTI care to answer my question?

I spent a couple of years working in Westchester county with people who earn considerably more than $100k, they're not rich, not even close. Maybe Yonkers is different.

Maybe we have different ideas of what is "rich". Live in a nice place, afford all the food you want, drive the kind of car you like within reason, and buy nice clothes? On $8000+ a month? I think you're rich as a single person, plus I think you'd get other legit perks as a councilperson. MTI's had started negative threads on rich folks, yet he will not answer if he is rich. Kinda reminds me of Al Gore jetting around and John Denver buying large fuel reserves.

I think we do have a different definition, you are describing someone who makes a comfortable living and shouldn't have to worry about paying their bills if they maintain a reasonable lifestyle. You are not describing someone who can afford to own multible homes and to lease $100k cars.

I understand that $8000+ a month sounds like a lot of money, but we are talking about someone who brings home about $5-6k, has at least $3k in mortage payments and is probably paying close to $1k to lease that silly car. She will not have anything left at the end of the month.

Let me put it this way, most people in my neighborhood earn twice as much as her, no one is driving a $100k car, and no one would consider themselves rich.
