Based on "reading that somewhere" or "hearing someone say that once", no doubt?!

You have to admit that "the duke" is a pretty good gay porn name; but it's still not as well suited as "johnjzjz" (say that fast a couple of times).

I think his first black and white cowboy movie was Stagecoach.

You can find out if the film is 'Red River' by going to www.imdb.com and looking up the title. There is a trailer for the film there. If it is not 'Red River' then the title could be any one of the Republic features Wayne did, and before that he was under contract to 'Lone Star' Stuidos. I think all of the 'Lone Star' films are in the public domain so they should be on YouTube.
If it is 'Red River' then an interesting bit of history is that H. Hawks, the Director, cast Montgomery Cliff in the 2nd lead because Cliff was a true Flamer in the gay community. Hawks knew that Wayne, who was accepting of gays due to knowing so many of them in the film business, did not like Cliff because of his over-the-top and in-your-face behavior. Cliff did not like Wayne because he saw him as narrow-minded, but people who knew Wayne said this was not the case. Cliff's behavior off screen was of little concern to Wayne, but his behavior on the set was seen by Wayne as being unprofessional. Hawks wanted tension between his two leads and he got it. |

But about half of Wayne's movies look pretty bush league these days.

There is an old Hollywood story about the film 'The Searchers'.
It seems that Wayne saw 'High Noon' and was outraged at the left-wing agenda of the film. Try as I might I have never been able to see what he was talking about, but he was pretty vocal about it. 'The Searchers' was, according to Wayne, his answer to 'HIgh Noon'. I can't figure that one out either. I like both films as they are entertaining. I can see no 'message' in either of them. Perhaps it was all just hype pumped out by the stuido to make people see the film. It reminds me of the Louis B. Mayer quote, "If you want to send a message, call Western Union." |

The mechanism by which some people decide what is and what is not good, red blooded, American political wonderfulness is a mysterious one, often enough.
I'm with you. I have a hard time placing either movie in left or right wing terms.

So if the film was 'Rio Bravo'...
I still can't see anything more than a carefully crafted story that is entertaining to watch. I mean, it's not 'Citizen Kane' or anything, but if you like that sort of thing it is one of the better films out there. Maybe I am not looking in the right place. |
