I've never seen "toughbook" and "not too expensive" (OP's words) in the same sentance before, but trolling their website (Panasonic makes toughbooks it looks like they've stretched their product line downward a fair amount.

Toughbooks definitely have a reputation for standing up to a lot of abuse, some are waterproof...but not the "not too expensive" ones.

I just bought one of these. 4 gigs of RAM, 2 gig processor, 15-inch screen. I bought it on sale, but it's still a pretty good deal at $529, IMO. The only shortcoming is that the speakers are a little weak.

A buddy who's an IT engineer recommended the ASUS brand. They're a major motherboard manufacturer branching out into portable computers.

You can find the Toughbook "Business Rugged" line on ebay for $400-$500.

Toughbook or ThinkPad.....and why on earth would you want to keep XP....Windows 7 is massively better. XP is so 2002.
