Why Did "Air America" Fail?
While the "right wing" media and blogosphere is dancing on the grave of the liberal fueled radio network, one has to wonder . . . how could anyone ever think it could ever have suceeded?
First, it's talk radio, a format long abandoned to sports, religion and, let be honest about it . . . angry people on the right. Second, there's no shortage of media choices for liberals, right? So, was Air America filling some void? No. According to Palin and the neo-cons, mainstream media was the liberal biased megaphone. Cashing in on their pledge dollars, lefties have always had NPR, right? Jon Stewart and Colbert handled the late night laugh fest. Third, it just wasn't as rabid, fear mongering or slimey as the stuff you'd expect from biased radio personalities. That's the stuff that drives rating numbers, at least among right wing talk shows, that the left just couldn't compete with. Yes it failed, but should any liberal be surprised? |

Radio? I think my grandfather had one of those when he was very young, or maybe it was his dad.

They failed because any balanced endeavor needs "two" wings. A one winged endeavor will always spiral out of control.

IMO, it takes money to run a radio station. Either enough people pay into it or there is sponsorship from advertisements. In this case, I suspect there was neither and it failed. IOW poor business model.

Even you must acknowledge that "the truth" that makes up much of right wing broadcast media in the past 10 years has been some variation of the theme "liberals hate America." That's how you get ratings, baby.

It's a good business model, they make a ton of money selling viagra, depends, or whatever; and the audience hears what they want to hear.

People vote with their dollars. Evidently there was no audience for liberal radio. Probably because that which did exist was already satisfied by NPR, which I listen to by the way, when I'm driving around. Don't listen to radio other than in the car.

True, also I just don't think very many people in their target age group even listen to radio. I actually listen to NPR (and lot of other stuff) by collecting podcasts of the shows I like on my iPhone and playing them in my car. I don't think I have actually tuned in a radio station in several years. My kids don't even own a radio, it's all chat rooms and streaming video/music on-line. Their idea was about 10 years too late. The rest of the old media types will run out of audience within a generation, just like broadcast tv.
