Dyson Vacuum Advice?
Are they really worth getting? Everyone I talk to says they are. I can get a DC07 at work for $250ish, and I am debating on if I really need one. My allergies seem to be getting worse as I get older, so I am thinking one might help alot with this, and if I get solid surface floors, one would work nice with them as well.

I have a DC14 Animal, and am pleased as punch.
There was a thread about them a few months ago.

I dont know what my sister had, but it "lost suction" as she says after 5 or so years. Quite contrary to the ad on TV. But we have one in our house and it's been working fine. I dont think it's THAT great though. Seems to work as well as any other vacuum we've had. I'm not a neat freak nor a vacuum cleaner savant though

I can get a Bisell with a similar design for around $170ish as well...

I have the DC15 Ball Animal. I like the maneuverability and it works pretty well. My only complaint would be that the front is too light and has a tendency to bounce over loop carpeting on the return stroke. I would check out a few of the other manufacturers and look at some comparisons between similar models.
Take a look at the Kenmore Progressive 36932 and the Eureka Boss Smart Vac 4870. Both may be better than the Dyson. Here is a good article/test of vacuum cleaners: http://www.consumersearch.com/vacuum-cleaners/review |

I am reading reviews on the Bissell, and people are liking them more than the Dysons...

I have a Dyson DC17 Animal, and its been going for a year now. Seems as good as the Kirby it replaced, and is like 1/4 of the weight of the Kirby.

DC14 Animal here. Works great so far. We have mostly hardwood floors with one last room with carpet and some area rugs.
Only one complaint and it's pretty significant: The vacuum has no height adjustment. If your area rugs are somewhat light, this vacuum has so much suction that it will lift them right off the floor and drag them along. It also has a clutch of sorts on the beater bar that disengages easily when the lighter rugs get picked up causing an annoying buzzing sound. Bottom line is that it works great on solid floors and wall-to-wall carpeting but your area rugs need to either be stiff, heavy or a combination therof.

Oh yeah, my other big complaint with the Dyson is the stiffness of the vacuum hose. It's just doesn't want to extend and tends to drag the whole machine across the floor. Also, if you get the wand stuck to something while vacuuming, the hose REALLY wants to retract and the vacuum will come flying towards you.

You can't go wrong with a Dyson....... if you intend to take care of it. The Dyson is the best vacuum on the market but it's not for the type of person who doesn't enjoy regular maintenance. I bought my brother and I identical DC14 Full Kit Dysons last Christmas. I tear mine down and clean out the cyclone chambers and filter once a month (more or depending on how much it's been used.) He emptied his dirt canister maybe twice a month and nothing else. His failed and required re-manufacturing this November, while mine still works as well as the day it was made.
If you're the kind of guy that appreciates and enjoys the maintenance, the Dyson is the best vacuum on the market. If you want something maintenance free that sucks stuff up go with a Dirt Devil. |

Fortunately, ours is easy to 'field strip' and clean. The only reason the Dyson has a hose is for casual use, so we still use the old canister, hose and brush attachment to reach a lot places easily. |
