Seriously, can someone explain this to me...

How the hell does Iran/Iraq show up on anyone's list of places they want to go hiking. I mean have you hiked every other sq ft of the planet and you need to go to Iraq to say you have done it all? It's like those idiots who 'accidentally crossed in to NK'. Yea right.

These are two countries who do not exactly have the reputation of being all warm and fuzzy. Were I to be so stupid as to go hiking some where in the vicinity of either of these places, I would be carrying 15 GPS devices with me and would not go with in 100 miles of the border.

Accidently hiked into Iran? Are you freaking serious?

Hikers

There are quite a few countries I have no interest in visiting unless certain conditions are satisfied:

1. I'm getting paid to go there.

2. I get to bring an M-16 and plenty of M855 ball.

3. I go with lots of friends with M-16's and plenty of M855 ball.

Pretty much the entire Middle East falls into that category. If these idiots just wanted to go hiking, there are plenty of nice places to do that in California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, etc.

OK, I am not big on conspiracies but does anyone believe that the US government had something to do with them being there? I do not know that I believe it but I would not be surprised if it came out that the CIA or some other acronym had their hands in this.

If they were not UC Berkley grads maybe that theory would be plausable.

These guys are just freaken stupid. They should let them rot in jail for a few more months, maybe Al Gore or Clinton can fly over and get them out. The Iranians won't kill them they are far more valuable alive.

OTOH if they wanted to hike in Iraq so bad they should have just joined the Army. Uncle Sam would have paid them to hike all over that country.

They probably have colleagues who are busy collecting "data" for their theses while in "rebel-infested" hot beds of Africa...

Yeah, 27 year old kids!

Any bets as to how they where registered as voters and if/who they voted for in 08?

They where most likely advance people/community organisers for Organizing for America! http://www.barackobama.com/

Yup, kids.

If the are average for their age group, they didn't vote.

Not quite! More than half of the 18-30 population voted in 2008!

Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service, Medford, MA – An estimated 23 million young Americans under the age of 30 voted in Tuesday’s presidential election, an increase of 3.4 million compared with 2004, CIRCLE reports, using overall vote count projections by Curtis Gans, director of American University’s Center for the Study of the American Electorate, latest exit polls, and Census Current Population Survey. This is an update of data released on November 5th by Tufts University’s Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), which is the nation’s premier research organization on the civic and political engagement of young Americans.

CIRCLE estimates that youth voter turnout rose to between 52 percent and 53 percent, an increase of 4 to 5 percentage points over CIRCLE’s estimate based on the 2004 exit polls. The 2004 election was a strong one for youth turnout, reversing a long history of decline. If we compare 2008 with 2000, the increase in youth turnout is at least 11 percentage points. This year’s youth turnout rivals or exceeds the youth turnout rate of 52% in 1992, which is the highest turnout rate since 1972 (55.4%).
