The only time I would recommend anyone buying a new car is if they can easily write a check for the full amount. I would still recommend that they buy a less expensive used car and keep the remaining cash for potential repairs. Personally, I'm not that interested in writing a $60K check for a new car.

But if you are going to have to budget for that already, it might be better to just get a new one and not have to worry about whether you over or under budgeted. After all, it;s not like Joe Citizen is the govt where they can print more money.

Not every car is starting at $60K

My Tahoe is being put out to GMAC lease return pasture this Saturday, as I take delivery of a new Nissan Xterra Off Road. It will be the first vehicle that I haven't leased since 1991. More modest than the Hoe, but more fitting to what I need out of a vehicle.

But I'm going to miss the big ol' tank.

Smile I only bought new ones twice.

I bought, for my then (now ex- ) wife, a brand new 2001 Firemist red Volvo C70 HPT (high performance turbo) a $42,000 top - of - the - line coupe and the car was so bad, Volvo of North America was forced to buy it back under the California Lemon law and refund the price.

Unbelievably, (verified by pictures, and Vin#,) the car rose resplendent on ebay, for sale for $24,000, a year after that, in the same city where Volvo NA is, in New Jersey, apparently VolvoNA auctions off Lemon Law buy backs to local dealers in Montvale NJ who clean them up and resell on ebay!!!.i

Other car was this Subaru Outback PZEV, that I got brand new, in March 2008, because:

1. I needed something reliable for snow driving (the lowered Mercedes SEC would probably get stuck in 20 feet in deep snow)

2. I had a birthday ending in zero, and wanted to treat myself, and could afford it, so hey why not?

3. The dealer offered it at ZERO percent on a loan, so that made sense (only one more payment left)

4. That "new car smell" is the second best smell there is. (right, aklim?)

My '95 one that was traded in, is visible behind:

It's been a great new car, not a hiccup so far at 21,000 miles so far..

I have transported a cello, catalytic converter, office furniture, and other big unwieldy things in it, this wagon is very versatile, yet gets great mpg, so there's no need for an SUV.

So, probably I will never get rid of it. Subarus are real reliable, durable, and now pretty comfotable and safe and cheap to run.

But well selected used cars make the best practical sense to buy IF they are in good shape, have good reputations, and will therefore have a Excellent dollar per mile cost to run.

3rd best thing. 1st would be like the movie "Scent of a Woman", more specifically, the diner place at the "Y". 2nd would be the smell of the room after. So the 3rd would be the "new car smell".

As long as all you do is light towing, sure. The lightest load I tow is a snowmobile trailer with 2 ATVs on it all the way to an 8000# Toy Hauler with the 2 ATVs in it.

I'm not big into the new car thing, I don't really see the point.

But two of my uncles who make a lot of money buy new cars every 2-3 years. One leases them and always has 2-3 BMW's on lease, another writes a check for them and it varies what he buys. He went through two Audi's, a G35 and now an E350. He also buys a new truck ever 1-3 years.

But they technicaly don't buy the cars, their tenants buy them for them. When you use OPM why the heck not, take the write off and enjoy.

A dentist friend of mine usually buys his big-ticket items on a Saturday. When that happens, I always tell him that I wouldn't give 50 cents to be his first patient on Monday morning.

I've never bought a new car, and don't plan on starting, but if I did, I'd probably do what I do with used cars: Drive it until it dies (ceases to be cost effective to maintain/repair) or is about to, or until I no longer need a vehicle of that size or type anymore.

That happened to my dad. The last new car he bought was a '71 Ford Maverick (with the 302). He lost it a few years later when he got divorced from his first wife.

First new car I bought was Feb 24, 1964. A chevelle SS, 283, 4 speed. And I still have it after 46 or so years. No, I have never been devoiced. Still have the same wife also, after 46 years.
