On line drivers ed class
My daughter is taking an online driver's ed class to get a permit. What do you think the answers to the following questions are:
Which is not a part of the engine cooling system: Thermostat Coolant Water Pump Catalytic Convertor The power of a transmission can be designed to direct the rear wheels only. True False My daughter kept answering these questions and failing the test. I talked to the company. They say a catalytic converter is a part of the cooling system and a thermostat is not. They say the answer to the second question is false because there are front wheel drive cars. My daughter and I say that we drive cars in which the power from the transmission directs the rear wheels only hence the answer is true. What do you guys think? I think the people at the company are idiots. They don't know how a cooling system works and they can't figure out when a sentence can have two possible meanings.

What company? I would get my money back, and place her into a "real" class, with a real instructor. Its just not the same, not being able to ask questions to influence discussion.
Young drivers need all the help they can get, I dont think this is a place to do an online thing. Just a thought from a young driver... I think an average ambulance ride costs between $300 and $1000. If theres an accident, most everyone rides in an ambulance for a once over... Unless it's a time crunch and she needs it desperately for some reason, Id get a good local school to teach her. http://www.skipbarber.com/driving_school/mazda/two_day_school.aspx I think that's the way to do it ~Nate

Wow. That's a weird one. First question is WAY off the mark, and the second one is just poorly-worded. What company is this? I'd love to shoot them an email and ask how the figure a t-stat is not part of the cooling system.

Was this a driver's ed course or auto shop class exam!???
It's like requiring a computer user to know how to build their own prior to allowing access!! I would think the failure rate would be pretty high if the average driver would have to know something about the inner-workings of a vehicle prior to receiving a license...

Hell, around here they don't even need to know how to change a tire. They have people driving around in trucks to help people do just that. Well, not help people, but to do it because the drivers can't even figure out what a jack is. Back to subject, that company needs to find the word "Google". Morons.

Is this a driver's education class to get a driver's license or a mechanic's exam? Why would anyone need to know anything about a thermostat in order to drive a car?
I would wager over 50% of the population would get the first question wrong (assuming thermostat is the correct answer ).

Give us names!
We'll flame them until they see reason, or refund your money. We'll report them to the educational associattions and the DMVs and they will lose their accreditation.

In order for a 15 yr old to get a permit in Colorado they have to take a basic driving class. (It's just on paper-no actual driving) This class is the course that the Colorado DMV directs people to on their website if they want to take a class online. It's called the Colorado Driving Course but the company than runs it appears to be in California. There are companies that offer in-person classes but when I talked to the most popular one on the phone, they seemed to be even bigger morons than this one.
If a person waits until they are older (18?) they can just take the written test at the DMV without taking any classes. I don't mind that they are making her learn about how cars work, it just would be nice if the writers of the course themselves actually knew how cars work and how to write a clear English sentence. I went round and round with them on the phone. They were insisting that a thermostat was a gauge and that the question implied that cars could only be designed with transmissions for rear wheel drive which is clearly false.
