when it comes to safety issues, there are no "perfect" car companies. for instance Princess Diana died in an S class mercedes. a car is a mechanical device, therefore it is prone to problems. However, for my money and for their over all safety consciousness, it will always be a Merc or a Volvo. there are too many moronic drivers out their who will ruin your day by running a red light at 80 MPH. when and if that day happens, I want to be sitting in a car that has been thoroughly designed and tested to take a severe hit.

That's a poor example, the Princess was making out in the back seat with her fiancee and NEITHER one were wearing a seat belt, and THAT is why they died. LIkewise Jean Paul the drunken driver perished, not wearing his seat belt.

The most exposed driver, her bodyguard, sitting in the right front "death seat" DID survive.

He was the only one wearing his seat belt.

That rented Mercedes Benz S280, owned by the L' Etoile limousine service, in Paris, even with a salvage title on it, performed well.

But its passengers that did not buckle up, didn't do their jobs, and for their omission, paid the ultimate price.

Can't blame the W140 Mercedes Benz S280 for that one.

What a great story it would be if the implementation of Mercedes new passive driver alert warning system (drowsy and lane drift) were the result of past news events.

No kidding. Even at 50mpg, all the benefits of a diesel without the hassle of owning a VW.

Looks like Ford has its PR team firing on all cylinders......

They use pedals from the same company (CTS) that makes the suspect Toyota pedals - so they've stopped production on the affected models.

Number of reported Ford issues: 0
Number of pedals used to date: 1,600

Ford uses the pedals on diesel versions of their Transit Classic trucks made in China. Just started production in December.

you are correct concerning the seat belts, it wasn't the car's fault. there are many many "questions" concerning Princess Diana's death. the age old question "who benefits?" will continue to be raised. certain parties among the royals appeared to have been relieved to have heard the news.......(sorry you were in a car wreck but this sure smooths out a few items of concern for us......).

my point is this: drop a 747 airliner out of the sky onto a merc and somebody is gonna feel it. we can never totally avoid all risks, but, given all options, I feel a lot safer in a mercedes or volvo than in any other car.

it's the red light runners that I worry about most. second would be tail gaters but I've learned how to get them off my a**. a hard hit in the side is a tough one to take....both Volvo and Mercedes are superior in their design when it comes to this type of collision. now, if we could just keep the cell phone yakking, texting moron drivers off the roads........

Call 911 on your cell phone.

My moms Rav4 has been perfect, its 3 years old now. Still waiting for something to break.

My dads F150 of the same vintage and mileage has been to the dealer three times for warrenty work. The last visit was for a new AC compressor and parking brake cable.

Right now in my family Toyota 0, Ford 3.

In many states, if it isn't hands free, you'd be violating the law.

California is not one of these, you can call 911 on your cell, but the dispatcher advises you to safely pull over first,
to the shoulde,r to give them the details they requested, to respond to the 911 call you just made.

I don't see how a problem with the pedals would cause unintended acceleration unless a person is hitting the gas instead of the brake. A sticky pedal could cause continued acceleration but not a burst of acceleration. The descriptions I have heard seem to describe an increase in acceleration.

I heard a news item that Toyota was seeking permission to install a shim in the assembly.
That likely rules out any (american-made) computer problems.
A SHIM? Is that a solution, or a placebo?
