Calling Aussies! Dodge Caliper question...

My favorite machinist has a hankering for one of those Calipers by chrysler corp. He heard they are offered down under with a little diesel. Anybody know about that?

He wants to get some crazy Aussie to ship him a diesel so he can have the only Caliper in the usa with a diesel.

Any chance?

Isn't it a VW diesel?

Isn't it going to have the steering wheel smack dab in front of the passenger?

Those cars have a VW 16 valve, 2.0 PD TDI, which makes ~145 HP. That engine was not sold in any US car.

Buy a Jetta or Golf instead. Similar drivetrain (8 valves instead of 16), better chassis

"just the motor" is a worthless paperweight without the electronics to go along with it. If I were trying to do what he is doing I would try to get the whole front clip of a donor car... cut the whole car in half aft of the dashboard. That should get you all the control modules and wiring you should need... unless chrysler is stupid and put important control modules in the back of the car.

The wiring will be no small undertaking. This is from when I retrofitted power memory seats to my Jetta (I had the whole body harness and had to sort out what I needed to move into my car):

Solder is so 1970:

The caliber is junk, I almost broke off the turn signal stalk in one at the auto show last year. Talk about cheap/flimsy! My wife knows someone with one, and it breaks ALL the time.

When I said 'just the motor' I was responding to the other poster who was suggesting he buy a _______ complete car. Of course he will need the electronics that go with the motor and probably that includes the computer.

I agree the caliber is junk but he likes the looks of them and sees one for sale with a blown motor so being a machinist he imagines fixing it and having just what he wants. (He has done this many times in the past).

Unfortunately now with all the interrelated electronic gizmos and computer controlled rear view mirrors which adjust when you park it is much more difficult.
