Relocating to MD

Accepted a new job, so I'll be relocating to MD in the near future. For now, I'll be driving up, staying the week and driving back to VA to finish the house and crap like that. Since I'll be on the Eastern Shore, I'm no closer to the usual suspects that attend the GTG's like JohnHef, PowerPig, Dee8go, or Mistress. (sorry if I missed people, you guys are like family). So, I'll still be coming to GTG's, just my tags will be from MD vice VA. The house search drags on and on, I hate this part. Looking in the Salisbury area, and it has to have enough room for a shop. I dont' really care about the house, but I have to have a lift this time.

Since I posted this in OD, I give this thread only a few hours before it turns into a political debate.

Not sure why but you should be spoiled for choice.

So as not to disappoint, let me be the first to say that your problem is one the Republicans created. Then someone can say it was a Dem that really did it. And then we can say that if we have a 3rd or perhaps a 4th party, none of this would happen. :D

The Eastern Shore ( always capitalized) is a place unto itself. Life is to be enjoyed there. " The Land of Pleasant Living".
I suggest you read Mitchner's Chesapeake. It will give you a better understanding of your new neighbors. You will gain acceptance if you are/ become a waterman ( not professional), or at least a fisherman.

To continue the political side....Former Governor ( and democrat) Wm Donald Schaffer, called the Eastern Shore, " The **** house of the state of Maryland" when they did not vote for his re-election. ( Feisty guy, that Don Schaffer.)

Anyway, welcome to the state. Our legislature is currently in session, " What's in your wallet?"

it took 3 minuets and if obomma did what he said you would not be moving -my guess - jz

Enjoy life on the e.shore. You'll still be expected to attend the GTG's on this side you know..

You guys don't disappoint, for sure. lol We are really getting tired of population catching up with us. We moved to where we are to get away from people. Since that time, they have added no less than 8 stop lights on a 5 mile stretch. And, they are building like crazy. We don't like people much, and are trying to get to a quiet are once again. Love the area up there. Probably end up around Snow Hill, but we've looked in Crisfield and Eden as well. We are too close to neighbors if I cannot pee off of my deck without them watching.

If you got it, flaunt it. If you don't, nobody cares. :D

Snow Hill is a very nice area, you won't have any problem finding a secluded house with lots of land for a pretty good price.

Of course since we are in the open discussion forum I'll have to point out that Sussex county Delaware shares these same attributes.... and we have lower taxes than Maryland!!!

I love it here, given what you are looking for I think you are making a good move with one caveat.....there are not many high paying jobs around here.

Oh does that sound familiar ... :o. I'm looking in Delaware and not having much luck ... lots of cute little houses in my range, but the garage/shop situation is always inadequate. I don't want a $500,000 McMansion with a big garage ... I want a small house with enough room for me to sleep and eat and set up my TV ... with lots of room to play with cars.

Good luck with your search!

The Zoning laws in Harford county, MD ( western shore) prohibit constructing a garage with more than 50% of the floor area of the house unless you file, pay and get an exemption.
Over regulation!

ImBroke 01-28-2010 05:59 PM

So many things to comment on.
Aklim, I aint got it, so no worries there.
Tim, we did look at a couple places online in the Delmar Laurel areas, but I don't want to drive an hour + to go to work. I could put some miles on the diesel that way though.
Bodhi, I think we're on the same lines of thinking.
MsFowler, that is some serious regulation. Screw that side of the state. My neck is redder than would be allowed over there.

rsmartin 01-28-2010 06:18 PM

too bad you didn't come to Tennessee.

I sold my business in People's Republic of MD... err I mean, State of MD

Tennessee = no state income tax, low cost living, beautiful scenery, and population that still believes the U.S. Constitution as written should still be the law of the land!!

Also, Chattanooga ( my town) is the site of the newly constructed VW plant, first one in the US so the economy is pretty good here.

good luck

You should be able to find this if you're willing to move south of the canal, OTOH the last time I was in Middletown it was more developed that New Castle was oh say 15 years ago... You might have to go further south which then makes the commute a bit long.

Just like in Virgina things have really changed in Delaware, but I'm guessing it will be the better part of a century before Snow Hill, MD starts to look like Middletown.
