Should the 2010 Census Be "Color Blind?"

Responding to an emotional outcry, the U.S. Census Bureau on Friday announced it would explore eliminating the term "Negro" from future surveys

The Constitution calls for the dicennial head count, but should they be asking all the other questions? The 2010 Census will actually be one of the shortest and simplest in U.S. history. It will ask just 10 basic questions including:

Name
Sex
Age and date of birth
Hispanic origin
Race
Household relationship
If you own or rent your home

IMO, they need just enough information to establish congressional districts and perform other functions specifically required by the constitution.

That reminds me, a request can be made to have census forms in different languages sent to a household.

Seems like reasonable questions to me, and I think questions of race/ethnicity are legitimate.

Good point. How the president, Derek Jeter or Tiger Woods answers the ethnicity question may be up to them as well.

what is the purpose of asking for race? what does that matter? I could put a number of entries there, as could most Americans whose families have been here a long while. I dont see the need for it, since we are supposed to be a colorblind society. It sounds devisive.
