Top uniformed officer: Gay ban should be lifted
I was not sure if I should have posted this on the gay marriage thread or not. I think it is related in that bans are being lifted in other areas. Eventually, gays will succeed and gaining equal rights.
Anyway, the Head of the JCS says the ban on gays in the military should be lifted. Gay ban should be lifted

I once heard an old Admiral comment on this subject. He said he had served with many Gay people and always found them to be good at what they did. But he did not want them on his ships.
His logic was if you had Gays on ships then relationships would develop and that would (not could, but would), in his experience, lead to 'love triangles'. And he did not really care about that. He did care about Unit Readyness, though, and anything that detracted from that not acceptable. He felt that the US Navy existed to protect the US and its' intrests around the world and needed to be ready to fight at anytime, so ANYTHING that reduced unit readyness could not be allowed. But Gays in any job but combat was OK with him. If someone is open and out they cannot be blackmailed by someone revealing what everyone knows. I really don't know enough about the subject to make a comment on it one way or another, but I wanted to pass on what this fellow had said. |

That sounds like the same argument that was used for women serving on ships. I think the military will figure it out and learn to live with it. I'm just a little surprised it took so long. In 50 years, school kids will be amazed that the old policy actually extended into to 21st century.

Where Did, and Where Does The Senior Senator From Arizona Stand on Don't Ask, Don't Tell?
It's a re-election year in AZ, so how surprised can we be? |

not one to be infavor of it i will say this and my hope you dont take it incorrectly --
coast guard, navy Except the Marines , air force, can take them with open arms -- the Army and Marines are called upon to be involved in MOST, i said MOST of the combat that goes on in what ever country we are saving the woman and children who are being killed because they are in the way ---- Men want to kill each other its a sport so to speak and no Kum bi ya is going to end it -- the killing rush is too great, the rewards are huge and the bravado is what it is -- also wearing a pair of red satin and fuzzy boots just dont cut it in the field my take for what its worth -- jz |

About McCain: Yes, he flip-flopped. That doesn't surprise me. I respect him as a war hero, but as a senator he's not always that great. I voted for him for president because he was less bad than Obama. About the question of straights and gays having to share living quarters and the head-we already do so now (see "Don't Ask Don't Tell"). This would just make it official. However, I think it would be more fair to make these arrangements co-ed a la "Starship Troopers". Then everybody gets to see what they like. Probably won't happen in the U.S. military any time soon. Finally, my personal impression of ADM Mullen's statement as a straight but not narrow six-year member of the U.S. Navy: It's about time. We've been throwing away good people for a bad reason. In particular we have trouble finding enough Arab linguists, and they seem to suffer disproportionately under DADT. There are plenty of good reasons people get kicked out of the service, but preferring a hot dog over a taco or vice versa is not one of them.

Hallelujah!
I'm not religous at all so maybe that was not the right word to use, but it sure feels good to see the slow approach of the end of the discrimination tunnel. I think i shall celebrate with two Benedryls with a Nyquil chaser!

The question that should be asked is; are there other national military services around the world that allow gays to serve openly, and has there been any trouble with the system?
The answer is yes there are a number of militaries, the Dutch and Scandinavians come to mind, and no there has not been a great deal of trouble. After all if women can serve and 33% get raped in the process why shouldn't gays be afforded the same courtesy? |

The above story in the Times referenced the British actor Sir Ian McKellen, who is Gay, and how the Royal Navy is asking his advice on how the Navy can be more appealing to Gays.
Now, with all the jokes about this... naw, I will not go there. But!--- When Sir Ian was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor he was contacted by all of the advertisers of the Oscars program. He did not know this would happen, but it turns out that if you are nomed then you get lots of bling from the advertisers. One of the show's TV sponsers was a mattress company. When they asked him what size of mattress he would like, he said he answered, "Why, Queen size, of course!" I can't remember where this took place, but I heard Sir Ian say it with my own ears, so even if it sounds like some weird story it is not. Truth is stranger than fiction. |

Serving Under DADT
Ironically, it was in the military that I learned to work with people of different backgrounds, different religions, different ethnicities and different skin colors and to focus on getting the mission accomplished. I learned the importance of respecting everyone and judging people on their performance and abilities, not on a preconceived prejudice. |

Gay discharged under don't ask
Something does not make sense. The warrant was not for the Sgt, it was for her partner. Why would the police have to tell the military anything about a suspect who has nothing to do with the military?
