I love Miatas! My brother used to have one that he auto-crossed in VA. I drove it for a couple weeks after my Toyota Celica was stolen in '93. Boy was it a lot of fun!! As for being a mid-life crisis car.... I don't think so, but if I were to have a crisis as I approach the age of 45, I think I'd have to go that route.

A 300SD isn't boring!

The roar of the diesel.....the torque....the smell of diesel exhaust....

That should be pretty fun. When I sold my MGB I briefly considered a Miata...a 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed version.

If I could get comfortable in those little cars I'd go for it.

The Miata's are on the edge for me, the S2000's are just to small.

OTOH the 911 is just right.

Meh, 911's have gotten too luxo for my tastes..unless you ironically pay a premium and get a stripped down version. The new Boxster spyder is pretty awesome though, weighs around 2800 lbs and has 330 or so HP i think and looks very nice.

For the $30K that a new miata costs, I would find a nice late-70s 911.

Nice Miata with a light side of rice! I figure my Subaru XT is similar to a Miata, albeit being an aerodynamic body on a 4wd wagon chassis. Mazda wanted to make a British roadster that actually runs and they pretty much got it right. I would pick one up if my XT goes kaboom.

WTH would you buy a new Miata?

For one tenth the cost of new, I can find a gazillion absolutely rock solid examples of motoring excellence.

Between the two of us, Darling Wife currently have three in running condition (i.e. I'd not think twice about sending Darling Wife, my daughter, or anyone else off on a cross country trip in any of 'em).

Total purchase price FOR ALL THREE combined was $5,500.

Wow, I guess you did alot better at buying than I did. Mine was barely in the 3s, but after taxes I'll be over that mark. I still have not found a cosmetic flaw on the entire car, nor any mechanical issue whatsoever. So much for making it a "beater". Just one more car I have to obsess over. I've driven it 110 miles in 24 hours, and had a blast. Julie was picking up the stick shift okay as well.

The bang for the buck factor is just incredible. Its a hit with me.

Twice tonight people in other ricers tried to race me, which almost never happens with Mercedes. Maybe the folks want a confidence booster with the Miata, and don't bother when they see the AMG badge on the back.

How many miles do you get to a tank, Jim?

These cars have surprisingly good crash test ratings. Not sure how...

Those are nice. I had a blast driving around in a late model Cab with the tiptronic awhile back.

911's are nice in all flavors.
