A person able to communicate is not in a vegetative state.

I did. Have you? Persons able to communicate have been misdiagnosed as vegetative. One would have to challenge the definition of vegetative to think otherwise.

Politicians

Chas H,

Both Georgia's U.S. Senators (AND MY LOCAL CONGRESSMAN) DISPROVE YOUR
THEOREM.

They are in a Permanent Vegetative State, awakened only by a check to their
re-election fund for minimum $10,000.00 USD being waved in their face.

I stand corrected.
There's a good chance other senators are in a similar state of awareness.

Neuroscience is an amazing field...Its funny to me how, with all of our technological advances (computers, biotech, etc.), we have yet to unravel much of the brain, which has been with us since day 1. Can't even imagine what advances will be made even within this decade.

The people in the study met the criteria for being in a vegetative state yet were able to communicate via the MRI. I don't see any reason to deny that they are in a vegetative state. We only need to think that we can now communicate with some people in a vegetative states and that vegetative states are not incompatible with some forms of consciousness.
For all we know, we might invent some process in the future for actually communicating with vegetables.

It took a study to figure that out? We've known this since The CLK Man began posting.

I agree. Neurosciece is an incredible field. Pharmacology is also a field I am mildly interested in.

However, I don't think people or the journalists writing this understand how the brain works.

Think of the brain as a large computer with non removable parts. When enough of these parts break then the brain will never recover.

In this case science has shown us that in this one particular case a man was able to respond to stimuli.

Seriously this doesn't apply to every case.

Everyone should have a living will set up just and make their intentions known. Nothing is more difficult then second guessing what a loved one truly wants.

It was 4 out of 23 vegetative patients studied who responded to the stimuli and the scientists seemed quite cautious about the results.
Don't know if it was in this summary of the study or another one I read which stated that patients who responded had experienced traumatic brain injury whereas people with brains damaged from lack of oxygen did not respond.
Seems to me that a person has to be pretty aware to respond to a command to play tennis in his head and then actually carry it out. I can't imagine a much more hellish existence that what those people are experiencing if the study turns out to be accurate. I wonder if they asked the patients if they were capable of experiencing pain?

geez, comment like that kinda makes me miss ole "W" coulda pinned that one on him a dozen different ways....

Call any vegetable, call it by name
Call one today when you get off of the train
Call any vegetable, and the chances are good
The vegetable will respond to you

Call any vegetable Pick up your phone
Think of a vegetable Lonely at home
Call any vegetable And the chances are good
That a vegetable will respond to you

No one will know
If you don't want to let them know
No one will know
'Less it's you that might tell them so
Call and they'll come to you
Covered with dew
Vegetables dream, Of responding to you

Standing there shiny and proud by your side
Holding your hand while the neighbors decide
Why is a vegetable something to hide?

After further studies

it appears there is no way to communicate with those in a vegetative state.

I thought the whole 'facilitated communication' business was debunked years ago in the US when therapists were using it on autistic people.
The articles doesn't debunk the MRI studies.
