Saw A BEAUTIFUL 45k Mile 280CE Today!
 

I was out in Huntington Beach today, and I stopped at a liquor store with a gorgeous red 280CE parked out front. It literally looked BRAND NEW (other than the wheels looking slightly tired) it was amazing.

I saw the owner inside, she was an older woman with a THICK Russian accent. I complimented her car, which made her extremely happy lol. She told me that she's owned it since new, and that it has 45k miles on it. She also said that she just replaced the water pump. I asked her if she would sell it, and she gave me a very weird look and said "It is perrfect and runs great! Why would I sell??" (Damn)

Anyway, just was excited about it and wanted to share with my forum people. :)

280CE's are great cars, have one, haha. In my opinion the M110 is in line with the OM617 in terms of durability.

I beg to differ. This is why, IMO:

The 617s get better fuel economy simply because they do not need to burn as much fuel as the 110.
The 617s are built in higher tolerances and can also sustain the added stress of the higher compression ratio.
The 617s do not have an ignition system so you will never have to tune them up.
The 617's exhaust systems last longer because diesel fuel exhaust is not as corrosive a gasoline engine exhaust.
And I'm sure there are many other rasons as well....

That 280CE is indeed very nice... but young Stewie, your opinion is unsubstantiated as a whole.
One single case (from your brief experience so far, you're only 15 right?) should not reflect the generalized comparison statement you just made.

I never said that the M110 did not require more maint. because it does. I simply said that in my opinion if kept running the M110 would have a comparable life cycle to that of a OM617.

Once again, that was MY opinion, everyone has a different one, thats what makes the world go around.

Every car will run for ever if you keep throwing money at it. :D

IMO, a W140 S600 in in line with a W123 300D in terms of durability. ;)

Just kidding, of course.

One bullet point for the M110 over the OM617 in terms of durability is more consistent fuel. Nobody tries to convert 280CEs to single tank WVO systems and run inadequately filtered WVO.

The M110 is indeed an awesome, but extremely thirsty, engine. If I was going to have a car that gets 12-14mpg it would be a 500SEC or 560SEC, not a W123 280....

And, 617 is best, simple as that. Though the M103 is pretty sweet too, I was having fun with mine today. :D :D

I've learned that being overly sentimental is of no use at all. Oh well, this is just a forum after all. :)

I never said that neither so don't extrapolate when unneccessary... it's as simple as the 617 is more durable & reliable than the 110, so your "life cycle" claim is negated. Period. :wink3:
I'm refuting the basis & content of your opinion, not your opinion per se. ;)
One more thing, opinion does not make the world go 'round... literally it's gravity but figuratively (and realistically) it's money. :D

You will learn, as you expand from your very early 20's, that certain things can really strike a chord with you. I'm fixing to have to put out to pasture my beloved Chevy PU that I bought brand new 31 years ago. Grew up in that old truck. {CSI would have a heyday in there} :eek::eek: But it is going to pain me like a young whipper simply can't fathom yet. Someday it will make sense grass hoppa.....:o:o

The m110 IS very comparable to the 617 in terms of durability. If you speak to folks who worked on them back in the day you will find an almost religeous reverence for the "bulletproof" m110.

There is a fellow here in the Lafayette area who had an m110 with over 400k on it.

Thirsty yes.

I have owned cars with the m110 and lots more with the 616 617.

Thirsty in the city, not as bad on the highway. An M110 with an auto will see 19-20 on highway, and the M110 with the 5-speed will see 22 on highway.

Old mint and well cared for W123 cars, usually diesels, are very common in the posh areas of Orange County - with their original California blue plates, especially in the rich areas and places where retired peope live, ie, areas like Laguna Woods, Laguna Beach, Lake Forest, Newport Beach, San Clemente, and so on, are so common that they are unremarkable.

The mild year round weather, and the serious car culture, helps with this plethora of such cars there.

I have made, last year alone, about 35,000 miles worth of trips, in my Mercedes, and another 10,000 miles in my wagon, last year, most of it to So Cal, and much of it, to that very area, is how come I know that very well.

In fact I bought my very own Mercedes Benz coupe at the House of Imports, an Orange County Mercedes Benz dealer as a certified used car down there by Disneyland when the car was a few years from new. I still own it today.

The man that used to own the Beverly Hills Hotel had owned it; I tracked him down and talked to him at his ofice on Wilshire Blvd and he gave me all the records he had on it, from April 1992.
