WHILE SHOPPING IN A FOOD STORE, TWO NUNS HAPPEN TO PASS BY THE BEER
COOLER.
ONE NUN SAID TO THE OTHER, " WOULDN'T A NICE COOL BEER OR TWO TASTE
WONDERFUL ON A HOT SUMMER EVENING."?

THE SECOND NUN ANSWERED,"INDEED IT WOULD SISTER, BUT I WOULD NOT FEEL
COMFORTABLE BUYING BEER AS I AM CERTAIN IT WOULD CAUSE A SCENE AT THE
CHECKOUT STAND."

"I CAN HANDLE THAT WITHOUT A PROBLEM" SHE REPLIED AS SHE PICKED UP A
SIX-PACK AND HEADED FOR THE CHECK-OUT.

THE CASHIER HAD A SURPRISED LOOK ON HIS FACE WHEN THE TWO NUNS ARRIVED
WITH A SIX-PACK OF BEER.
"WE USE BEER FOR WASHING OUR HAIR" THE NUN SAID,
"A SHAMPOO, OF SORT, IF YOU WILL."

WITHOUT BLINKING AN EYE, THE CASHIER REACHED UNDER THE COUNTER. PULLED
OUT A PACKAGE OF PRETZEL STICKS AND PLACED THEM IN THE BAG WITH THE
BEER.
HE THEN LOOKED THE NUN STRAIGHT IN THE EYE, SMILED AND SAID, "THE
CURLERS ARE ON THE HOUSE."

Fry has some decent points. The words of Cardinal Ratzinger in regards to the priest child abuse scandal are astonishing.

The amazing thing to me is not that the catholic church, or any church for that matter, says these things but that billions of people believe in and find some sort of perverted comfort in this kind of crap. And worse yet when the purveyors of this crap get caught, put in jail, and shown up for what they are their poor, benighted followers keep supporting them. As Lenin said, "Religion is the opiate of the masses".

Saw a small piece in today's paper indicating the Irish are putting pressure on the Pope to own up to the Church's role in the sex abuse problems in Ireland.

I have seen a number of reports on the diminishing role that religion is playing in European countries, esp. the catholic ones.

It is unfortunate that, as with the fundamentalists in any religion, it will be the poor and uneducated that fall for the church's line. They will give any money they have, do what the church says, breed like cockroaches while they are at it and then leave it up the the rest of us to pay the bill.

In my 67 years, 20 of which were spent traveling and working around the world, I have seen enough of organized religion to know that anything they give away comes with many strings attached. Granted their schools may give one a reasonable education but it comes at the price of having their form of science and morals force fed to very young and vulnerable.

How could you trust any institution that has a history of things like the crusades and the inquisition, the persecution of Protestants in the middle ages, hundreds of years of child abuse and church sanctioned protection of the abusers, support of the Nazi regime, the selling of indulgences, and not to mention hundreds or years of bilking the poor and gullible.

I live in a relatively poor and highly catholic (Hispanic) area of Texas. I see the catholic church at work every day and it is not a pretty sight. They convinced their members that the only way to heaven is through their doors and you can only get those doors opened by popping out kids ten to the penny and giving more than you can afford. Now if the parishioners get some sort of solace and peace from this scam it is all well and good but don't come mister righteous and pious to me about how yours is the true and only to heaven.
