It's not really a quote but rather a summary. That passage does say that. Back then instead of divorcing you could just say you hated your new wife and if you could prove she wasn't a virgin and she could be stoned, apparently.

And if you look at this: 28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. [c] He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. Seems like I can rape a girl who is a virgin and give Dad a few pieces of silver marry her and be done with that. Hmmmmmm

Yes, but you could never, ever divorce her. A prison term might be better.

You could be right. With a prison term, it is finite and you can get time off for good behavior. Married to that girl, she probably will live forever and you might wish you were dead. So could that be considered cruel and unusual punishment?

Eh I just treat that book the same way I treat Greek mythology. It makes life a lot easier and doesn't complicate the modern era with reasoning from ancient times.

Instead of taking it literally, wouldn't it just make more sense to extrapolate the lessons about being a good person from those old stories? And to make matters even worse the old testament is just a poor translation of the Tanakh. This just makes the old stories so much more convoluted when they're read in English.

You have to understand that women were basically property and not very good investments at that. After all, they cannot carry on the family name, no real earning power, mouth to feed and not strong enough to contribute. Poor investment if that.

Greek and Roman mythology was way more fun to read.

Much easier to flush the whole thing as we do for a story about voodoo.

You might want to modify your stand on the earning power of women. Currently 60%+ of college students are female and the numbers are going up. Women's position in management and the parity in salaries in both the States and Europe are increasing.

It is 'extrapolation', interpretation, and translation that has made it more difficult for thinking people to take any religious tome seriously.

Check out how many different slants there are in Christian sects. Each one claims that theirs is the true approach and that all others, esp. non-christian, are doomed to hell. How can any sensible person take this kind of posturing seriously?

Why we still take them seriously is a mystery to me. Why do we need answers, any answers as long as we have an answer is not clear. I want correct answers and not just an answer.
