Insurance Catch 22..
I had a lovely day fighting with several insurance co's to insure a new truck (old ambulance) they go by the VIN which is apparently requires a Commercial thing, I wanted to do a pleasure only vehicle, they wouldnt insure like that so they'd refer me over to personal auto's which say since it's a commercial type truck it has to have that type of insurance... needless to say it was a pain in the rear but I finially got insurance as a commercial delivery vehicle... So i'll do a few shipments through Uship a month to satisfy that.. but has anyone else come across that kind of situation? what did you do about it

RV, and pleasure use only is the way to go on insurance. My diesel motorcoach is a pittance to insure with full coverage, even though it's near new. About 50% less than what the Mercedes-Benz costs to fully insure, even though the MB is driven way less.

Since it's not considered an "Rv" It cant be insured as one.. now... when I get done with it... Then it'll be an RV... as a side question... anyone interested in seeing like a log thread on it?

Sure to the log thread.
I think if you have trouble insuring it as a pleasure vehicle you might just need to talk to a different insurance company.

Talk to Lloyd's of London. Most insurance in the world traces back to them anyways...

I agree with the 'talk to another company' suggestion. I once picked up a 1987 Sterling, which was made in England by Rover, and my insurance company just flat said no way, we do not insure 'orphans'.
But another company did with no problems at all. |

Try Nationwide - they saved me 40% over GEICO on my motorcoach.
Better coverage on my MB than Geico, for a tad less. |

I don't know if this is a collector vehicle or not. If it is, and you can store it in a garage or such, then I'd check out Hagerty insurance. They are a big name in collector car circles. I have them insure my '75 Bricklin. The only restrictions are it can't be my daily driver, and I have to garage it when parked at home. There are no milage restrictions or daytime use only etc, like other colletor car insurance companies. I pay about $200/yr.

i've used am family for years and when i got my fl-60 they wanted me to insure it as a commercial truck.which i did for 6 months.and i was talking to a buddy of mine that works for great west which insures over the road truckers.he said there were 2 or 3 guys there that insure theirs as an rv.so i went to am family and said i might switch if they can't insure mine as an rv.my agent told me to hold on for a couple weeks as they were having their annual company meeting.evidently there are lots of us out there because they changed their policy to cover them as rv's.so definately check around

I have run into the same thing in texas . Anything over 14,500lbs is considered commercial. I have the F700 with service bed . 18,000lbs unloaded is what the title states. I went to my insurance agent and he said progressive will insure it as a pickup. No decals and not for hire are the stipulations . I went on the medium duty sites and they verify what he is saying. It also depends on the trooper as to the hell you have when pulled over.
The registration is $450 a year due to weight and terp charge on an older diesel. So I havent made a rush to the tax office to get it running yet but well see. The tax office also told me that the land taxes will go up as well because a commercial vehicle is parked on my property.

I have found that if you have umbrella coverage has its advantages. If you have home, liability, flood and your cars all with one company. The company and your agent will be quite accommadating to special circumstances. The price difference is negligible.
