Tesla just lost 3 Senior employees
The plane crash today in East Palo Alto took the lives of three Tesla employees-1 Sr Engineer and 2 other unidentified employees.
Tesla ain't that big and losing Sr Engineering stafff cannot be good for the firm, especially since they announced they are ending production of their present model next year and will take a 2 year hiatus while they design the next model. The company that builds the Tesla has told Tesla that they cannot continue to make the car after this year due to other contract assembly obligations. Not good for Tesla... |

Wow, that has got to be quite a blow to absorb if they are all senior employees (and still a shame regardless). While logistically it might not always be possible, even we, as a small company selling ag products, make sure principals fly on separate flights for that very reason.

Where I work all senior staff travel on separate flights for this very reason.

same here, with one addition--
-an employee who acts as a pilot for a company business trip will be subject to discipline and / or dismissal.
Easy to see why, given the talent Tesla has lost...

That is sad for the loss of life due to the crash. I wonder what portion of the decision to have three high level employees in the same plane was motivated purely as a matter of cost.

I recall being on weekly flights with about 20 other engineers from the same project when we all had to be in the same place (when I worked for a big company). I don't recall any of us asking permission because no one is willing to waste their time by taking a less convenient flight. I guess the could have disciplined us if we were all killed.

No policy like that for cubeville dwellers.
I used to travel to PHX all the time for Motorola. Sitting in the waiting area before departure early one morning, I counted 26 people that I knew from the Oak Hill plant. Most were working stiffs like me. No telling how many were on that flight from Ed Bluestein and various other MotoAustin sites.
We used to joke that they should fly those America West planes upside down so they'd have an "M" on the tail.

The plane that crashed was a '76 model. Could be bad for Tesla. But how many small auto company startups have ever made it?

Agreed, you don't see me rushing to get in one.

Then again I am not entirely clear as to Tesla's business plan. At $100k plus it's more of a research and design group. It would have to license the drivetrain technology since it seems like Lotus is a free agent, to make the car cheaper than $25k down with $1600 a month for car payments. |

There's some weird karma going on with the company. The current head guy has reportedly slammed the original chief in public/print numerous times. Some bad blood and bruised egos about. And now this. With Lotus essentially walking, they'd need to sell out or be very subservient to someline like Subaru, or maybe that new Indian company to have any kind of shot at relevence.
