Tsunami

The quake is bad enough. Is the tsunami threat as serious as it sounds?

Huge quake.

Not looking good for Christmas Island.

Wave will hit there in about 2 1/2 hours. Expecting about 8 foot waves.

Low lying villages on the east facing side of the island (Banana and Main Camp) will probably be gone. The airport is also on the eastern shore. Poland village on the lagoon probably also in danger. The villages on the north or west side of the island (London and Tebwakea) may or may not be OK.

High ground (Joe's Hill, elevation 40 ft) is on the east central part of the island, but no transportation to move 5000 people there.

Pray for these good people. They're going to need it. We are probably going to lose some friends there.

There are many variables that can effect wave dynamics over that much open water. Unlike the Indonesian quake which created surges closer, the ocean floor over the Pacific and currents can dissipate or intensify the wave. I've probably experienced five or six tsunami warnings where there have been coastal evacuations, but none so far have amounted to much than an abnormal high tide. However, each one is different, so we'll just have to see.

Wave height was reported to be about 7 feet in Tahiti. Apparently no big damage.

Can't wait to hear what R. Limbaugh or P. Robertson have to say about Chile.
