peoples kindness supprised me tonight.

tonight i converted a friend of mine to the diesel mercedes ranks. she had been looking for a car for awhile and with her budget of 1500, it was making things though. as a joke she was sending me CL ads for mercedes went she sent me one of a 1982 300D turbo for 2100. her joke quickly turned into a half an hour drive to check out a potential buy. we got there and the car looked very decent. paint still had shine and was original. started with no problems. interior was in great shape and the transmission was PERFECT. only issues were bad shifter bushings and a major need for a brake fluid flush.

after a test drive, i negotiated for my friend, since she has no clue how, and talked them down to 1600. keep in mind the car has everything working from the vacuum locks, to the sun roof, to the super cold 2XX A/C (cant remember the numbers), and no rust. to be honest, im completely jealous of her car and wish i would have held out 2 more months, but as i digress.

the owner of the vehicle was a nice fellow who's grandfather was a mercedes only mechanic from germany. he worked at the mercedes of orlando before it moved to longwood if any of you are familiar with the area. well, the grandfather recently passed away and had compiled a HUGE assortment of parts and his wife is the owner of a stunning 1989 300SD with an actual 30,XXX miles on it. as an added bonus to the purchase of the vehicle, they said i could have any parts i wanted FREE of charge, a OM617 service manual, and included shifter bushing for the needed repair.

It's not often you meet such stand-up generous people in this world. It's a rarity I wish was more common. Sorry for the super long story, just felt like sharing.

Good for you. I've heard many stories of similar events, but it's best when it happens to you.

Time to pass it forward

Me and the wife have been looking for a 617 engine close by.
We check every one that comes available on CL. Weve had some strange encounters and some memorable ones. Two that stand out.

We met an old tow operator who let me try to get 80 300SD car started for two days. Finally said drag it home try it out if it dosent work bring it back I'll give you your money back. He had some good stories as well.

Then the other night we went to look at one that just came out . Didnt know it at the time but It was owned by a fellow forum member Mulchman. Turned out to be a real nice guy . Upfront and honest about everything . Exchanged some tips learned on this forum as well.

They are out there it renews your trust and outlook in fellow human beings.

There is this old Czech gentleman who lives near Ithaca who had a bunch of w123s and other vehicles in his lots. They looked very rusted, but I decided to call and ask if he was parting any of them out.

He said he was so I decided to make it down there.

Well to my surprise he was an old mechanic from the "old country"! Such a cool guy. Crazy racist, but at his age it's just something that can be let go. He had at least 5 w123s (one euro wagon!), a 76 6.9 gasser which apparently is super rare, and a couple w124s, and w126s.

I was looking for some nice bundts but those are apparently hard to come by. I ended up talking with the guy for about 15 minutes and left empty handed. I still think the trip was worth it

Of course you can.
Go to your 'fridge, open the door, and grab one.

I sold a 300SD with no engine to turbobenz 2 years ago. since then we have become friends, took the SD to Texas, and now he rents a room from me. A great guy and a great friend... Thanks Al Gore for making the Internet.

No one on the forum can help you? Periodically people mention bundts are easy to find.

The only thing I find hard to find are the alloy rims vs steel ones.

And of course, 15" hub caps and rims
