CLS550

I know we mostly stick to the older, less computerized models here, but does anyone have any personal experience with the CLS? I have loved the look of these cars ever since I saw one the first time. I walked by a CLS550 on a used car lot this morning and it got me started thinking about them again.

A friend of mine has one and he loves it. The rear is a bit cramped for an six foot adult. Design wise I think they are a little dated already.

All I know is how the look and I love the way they look. That roof line is the coolest!

The scariest part of the whole car is airmatic. The strus cost around $1000-1400 new. Not a bad price, as you only replace them once every 100-150k miles. I think the older M113 is bulletproof, as IIRC the M273 has problems eating the gear on the front of the balance shaft...

Its based off the W211 E-Class platform, so its got a good starting point.

The back seat is not practical for me at 6'2, but who cares. I'd be in the driver's seat anyway.

Beautiful cars, and they're getting fairly cheap now.

I've driven a CLS500 fairly extensively and even though they are E-Class based they have a character all their own with a completely unique interior and good looks so nice they could kill. The air suspension does give a nice ride (If you don't mind what IWrock pointed out it's not so bad) Sitting in the back isn't bad at all. It doesn't have S-Class legroom but it's not exactly VW Scirocco cramped either.

AMG makes every MB better.

Friends of mine just picked up an off-lease one with the commensurate 30K or so miles on it in Iridium Silver. Haven't heard any negative about it in 3 months now from them - they're MB diesel die-hards like me - so it was somewhat a surprise. They're pretty cheap when 3 years old - lots of them coming on-line because their leases are up. I'd say go for it - if you like the retro-look.

What are the miles, year and price on the one you are looking at?

I like the looks of them too. If I were to get a newer MB though, I'd be going after a ML 320Cdi.....the ML's are pretty awesome.

Beautiful to look at, I bang my head every time I try to get in one. Drove August Busch IV's CLS 6.3 before he did...it had delivery damage and I drove it to the body shop...it was a screamer.

Eh, the looks don't do anything for me. I don't get a four door sedan that doesn't have a usable backseat. And believe it or not, the 211 E-class has a much lower coefficient of drag.

Airmatic struts go out a lot sooner than 100K. I've had one replaced on my 211 - at 4 years, 2 months of age and 34K miles. Surf on over to the mbworld.org 211/211AMG forums and you'll see that replacement well before 100K is the norm, not the exception. There is an aftermarket rebuilder of struts in the ~$400 range, and replacement is apparently quite an easy DIY.

Something to enjoy when you are broken down by the side of the road and waiting for the tow truck to arrive.

Quality control, durability and reliability *NOT*
what they were 20-25 years ago when the engineeers held sway to create cost-no-object gems, now it is the marketers in charge, "You TOO, can drive a (leased) brand new Mercedes Benz for $299 a month", (Walmart "pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap" mentality now holds sway in the company)

The brand equity from Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler's original vision, and motto "The Best, or nothing at all" -------> ("die beste oder nicht") is being squandered, in search of short term mass profits, so the new Mercedes Benz cars evoke sadness and regret, and disdain and disgust, not desire, to me....

I'd take a mint low mileage 1977 240 Diesel *ANY* day, over some *new* CLS...
