The one car my dad had that I really liked was a 126/500 SE (short wheel base) euro. Comfy as heck, fun right pedal and quite roomy front or back IIRC

If I was on a "budget" I would scoop up a VW Pheaton V12, for the money you can't get anything better. If money was not an option there would be a Porsche Panamera Turbo S or Maserati Quattroporte. And if I would not even ask for the price it would be a 2010 Mercedes CL65...

For me either a '69 600 Pullman or a Maybach does it.

Problem is that NOBODY in the USA can work on them.

Even the VW dealer techs don't know how to fix them or what to do with them.

Too bad, because they are lovely cars, that do very well in Europe and the Fatherland, but over here, they SCREAM "Volkswagen"

and that killed them here in the states, where "Volkswagen = CHEAP transportation!!!"

For price is no object, I would love to try out a Rolls. I have only been in one old one and it was sex. I have never tried a Bentley or Maybach.

For a car that one would normally see on the street (outside of the big money neighborhoods), I really want to get a BMW 750Li, even better, the 760Li. I would go out tomorrow and get a 745Li, but they are widely known to be trash due to the shotty beginnings of iDrive.

I have to agree here... my dad has a 1998 LS400 that he pampered and it looked brand new (that is until it got hit by a inattentive driver running a red light). That car was nearly flawless...

I'd go with the Maybach 57. You get the full experience without the ostentation that comes with a Rolls Royce or Bentley badge. I'd rather enjoy my luxury experience anonymously. I think the new RRs are the equivalent of a diamond encrusted Rolex - they scream "look at me, look at how much money I have". Nobody knows what the hell a Maybach is, and I'd quite like that.

I was at a car show 2 years ago and a guy had a new Rolls Phantom. He had the doors open so I asked if I could sit in it as I had never been in one. I had sandals on so I took them off as not to soil the carpets. I had never had the luxury of curling my toes in 2 inch wool carpets before.

I have sat in a Maybach before and IMO the Rolls just smacks the smile right off the Benz in the "Holy crap this is luxury" dept. The electric closing rear doors, the carpet, the sitting position behind the rear door opening, the mirror image matching wood, the feel of the a/c vent pulls.... all of just oozes royalty.

Waste - just equip a Toyota Avalon with a faux convertible roof and the Gold Package and save a few dollars.

Got to drive a Maybach 57 a few years back. Plenty of go, plenty of stop. Turns very tight. And yes, few people would know what it is. Seemed well put together. I'd be curious to know how the first ones are doing now. They are old enough to be developing issues and rattles by now, if they are going to do so.

I've driven the Continental GT so I can see how he came to that decision. The Continental looks huge from the outside but every interior dimension is diminutive and there is just no getting away from the fact that your holding a VW key and turning VW heat switches while staring at a VW screen and riding on a VW suspension..... The overall effect really kills the experience. I sat in the back of a Proper Bentley once (Arnage) Those cars are real Bentley's. The DB9 simply trumps all other cars in the looks department so I think his opinion is pretty accurate.

When it comes to the Maybach VS Rolls Royce decision is seems to come down to the personal tastes of the owner. I think it would be accurate to say that the Roller buyer is more of a "Look at me!" type of buyer whereas the Maybach owner would be much more discrete. Personally I would take a Maybach 62 so it's a shame that they aren't going to make them more. I would have imagined that the next generation of Maybach would have been something else entirely and would have retained their amazing interiors but pushing themselves even further from their Mercedes counterparts.

As far as more accessible luxury is concerned you will NEVER do better then a big Mercedes-Benz Coupe The latest in automotive technology, great looks and yet still quite practical.

When they come out with it, because I like the '60's one so much.

Or a Maybach, huge, but supposedly handle well.

And I'll through any of the Cadillac Broughams on there, because they're just ridiculous.
