Drove an interesting car today: 1969 Saab V4

My good friend Bob, who owns the local import salvage yard, just acquired this car last week. It had not been running in three years, and it is an all original one owner with supposedly 90,000 original miles.

All it needed was fresh gas and a clutch bleed, and it was on the road. I thought using the 4 speed on the tree would be challenging, but it actually is quite intuitive.

No, I did not buy it.

Looks like it only needs some cosmetic work...is that car worth anything in decent shape? It's unique for sure!

I don't have the slightest idea. Today he's going to swing by so I can take some photos and throw it on ebay.

I imagine he'll do fine considering it was a sub $500 purchase. It was parked because the clutch would not engage properly after a complete clutch overhaul. Turns out it wasn't properly bled.

Absolutely everything works, and it drives perfectly. No excessive noises, vibrations, and tracks perfectly straight.

His other recent purchase was a cherry 2001 XJ8 Vanden Plas with 109,000 miles. Timing chain let go.

I was installing auto A/C systems in 1968 in Arlington, Texas. We used to do a lot of SAAB cars for the dealer.

Mostly Sonnets. They started out with a 3 cylinder two-stroke and then went to the V-4. This was due to polution regs which shut out the two-stroke engines from the US.

As I recall this engine came from Ford of Germany.

I worked on many back in the day. The Ford V-4 was from the Taunus and was a bunch more powerful than the old corn popper. The clutch and trans were barely up to the added power, the rest of the car was trouble free.

He bought this car non-running, taking a chance that it may not be economically feasible to get going again. Then would come the part out and scrap. I'd imagine he would part with it for $1500-2k now, but I didn't ask. I think ebay is the best place to put this car. Just make it a low opening bid/reserve, and see where it goes. He will certainly make some money on it.

it's a nice quirky little car - the pastor of our church when i was a little tyke (and a believer ) had one, and swore by it.

i assume its a front drive deal?

looks like its a little rusty around the edges? and underneath? then again, its fifty+ years old.

Is that a 95? I'm not sure of the old models, but it sure looks like one.

Check the condition of the rear shocks. Then see if you can find anything that will replace them.

It was used in so many forklifts that you can still get parts.

Great cars. Great shape, simple to work on.
Came out of a club in Burlington Vt years ago to find the plow had gone by and plowed everyone on the street in. Out of the 4 cars that were leaving 3 were 4 wheel drive, 1 was not.
The jeep, landrover and subaru could not get out and were reduced to shoveling the plow line. The Saab? we drove it out and waved goodnight.
Years later it was in Colorado and the engine exploded. We buried it under the driveway...

Most interesting car I've seen in a long time. Used to see a few when a teenager growing up.

Your friend has a unique set up to get a lot of nice cars and trucks on the cheap. A guy back in Omaha that owned a scrap yard would only drive cars like your friend gets. He was also a bucks-up gagillionaire - a connection somewhere there....
