Do you have a side business?

Do you have a side business separate from your 'regular' job?

I'm trying to get some new ideas to earn more money.

You and me both. I am wanting to actually get rid of my "regular job" and be my own boss. As Demitri Martin put it: " employee of the month is a good example when you can be a winner and a loser at the same time." Or something to that effect.

Here's what you guys should do. go to www.signwarehouse.com and buy a demo sign plotter. For about $3000 you can get started out of your house or go to flea markets and festivals and make a killing. The machine will pay for itself in no time. PM me if you need any more info.

Once my side business became large enough to support my lifestyle - my fulltime work became my fulltime hobby as an indy sales agent.

I'm too busy nowadays to ever get a "job" working for someone else. Working in a 'controlled environment' is a dead end as far as I'm concerned.

Best advice - sell something people want and need.

I got into programming PLC (programmable logic controllers) as a hobby using the Basic Stamp Kit, trying to get my yard sprinkler system to talk to my PC. Eventually turned into a full time job that paid very well. Latch onto an emerging software technology, and consume yourself with learning it, be absolutely obsessive about it. If I was in my twenties again, I'd be looking hard at the mobile phone apps. XHTML-MP is the new language for the gadgets that allows you to tie them into corporate databases. My guess is that will be the $150 a hour contracting job of the future.

How much more money are we talking about? Just a few buck, go work at Subway, Wal*Mart or whatever. OTOH, if you are serious about finding a job to replace the one you have that is a different story.

Yes I do. I pick up one or two foodservice consulting jobs a year.

I won't be able to help you much there, I've been translating tech manuals or being the French-languag voice of BMW Canada in their dealer training program and working for PPG. The problem is that it's seasonal work at best. Not very steady.

I'm looking for something in the computer services area or MP apps as well. Computer repair and security is an interest. I just found out I couldn't do my other part-time interest because even with the proper Federal licenses, it's illegal in Michigan, so am still looking.

I have my commercail and residential business.

I have built up about 26 rental units. If I did nothing else I could live on it if I did the maintenance and everything my self.

Now would be a good time to buy rental property if you have cash to invest. I would only buy in good neighborhoods though.

It looks like a good chance the real estate market will not fall any more.

I do actual work on the side.

IMHO getting paid by the hour isn't much fun, since you can only sell 8-12 hours a day.

It is when you charge say $50 minimum to work "for up to an hour" on a computer, then the repair takes you 10-15 minutes.

The earlier you start to try your own enterprises the younger you are when you get over the learning curve. To be really succesful whatever that means to an individual requires a variety of personal skills. They have to be developed if not intuitive.

Hand in glove with making money is learning how to spend it efficiently in the early period. I very much doubt that even ten percent of the population are really good at this.

Since there is no yardstick to judge that skill you only know you have arrived when people start to comment about it.Or seek advice in that area on a fairly regular basis from you.

Living a life and keeping all components of it in proper perspective is perhaps an art form. I try my best yet fail to a certain extent in that area. In my life I take it as a given that for some unknown reason I can generate as much cash flow as I want to. At the same time staying very ethical in all my dealings.

This individual component has to become part of your trademark so to speak. Without it you cannot succesfully transition to new ideals in my opinion. What is self confidence based on something intangiable does need development with time as well. Sure I stumble from time to time. Constant evalution usually makes recovery possible on any given ideal or project. As I
have gotten older this occurs less even if the projects are getting much more complex in nature

I guess my basic message to entering the true enterprising side of working is you have to turn yourself into some format of a complex package. This is normally only aquired with experience. This means usually lots of time and effort until you understand all the ropes. There are many unwritten rules to the game. The nice thing is anyone can try to play.

Plan for and expect difficulty initially. If you can get by that you prevail. The aquired money is only societies way of measurement or approval of your methology. It may be the goal so to speak initially. You have to get by that as well at some point.

You may be right Tom. In my opinion it is important for some stability to occur at this time. As these young fellows may or may not know it takes guts to buy in a down market but is the only sensible thing to do. Just like the stock market if you play it. The starting of the incremental interest rate increases indicate the panic in real estate may have at least moderated now.

You usually will always do well if you buy right.Or more fairly stated the odds of doing well are increased by it. There is a real educational opportiunity here in real estate right now. If you do not own property buy now. The worse case senario beyond that is not all bad. Later again the upward higher valuations that should occur probably will strain people. If you are not a landlord and want to go there at least talk to some before jumping in.
