Might well happen. Unfortunately our 200K mortage is on a house worth maybe 30 or 40 so bankruptcy would result. We shall see what we shall see.

There is talk about firing many teachers in CT as well and frankly that is just sad.

No comments about WHERE to move ....

Im in pretty rural Tennessee where there are now a smaller number of mfg's.

tonkovich appears to be in the Los Angeles area and his income has taken much more than just a minor hit.

I have a number of friends in the LA area and each of them have said the same thing... 'its getting worse daily here' or words to that effect.

Yes from what i've been reading Southern California has been one of the hardest hit regions in the country. Not to stereotype or anything but perhaps because it signifies the overindulgence that some have mentioned in this and other threads. Not sure though....anyone want to confirm or refute that statement?

I know CT has been hit but there are some signs that we're either going to stay level for the time being or begin to (Slowly) pull out of this mess.

I believe the OP was using shame as to show how some people would rather not work than be employed. Any non-enabling parent would point out the same to their unemployed kid.

The OP's been in the trenches of hard times himself and has bounced back to help himself - I think he made some uplifting and accurate points in the original post.

Sounds like you've become bitter over your income dropping. You have to keep keeping on - just like the rest of us.

actually, i worked every day this week, including sunday. and five days last week. however, the rates have dropped, and there are long dry periods. and no one is hiring. and the city and state are letting people go. "bitter"? no. just the facts.

the issue is that corporations and the wealthy don't want to pay taxes or provide social services for people. and they have the cato institute to shill for them. and people like you who believe that the cato institute is a "libertarian organization". you don't know propaganda when you see it.

I understand exactly where they are coming from, I just happen to agree with them on this issue. I disagree with them on other issues, such as health care. It's all "propaganda."

What is funny about people losing jobs?

The county school corp here is laying off 20% of its staff in the fall, at least they have given pink slips to that many.

This kind of draconian cuts are simply unprecedented in the field of teaching.

My Mrs. is in the city school corp which is separate and through foresight have avoided the drastic cuts by careful planning when they knew the economy would affect the tax collection in the next year or two. My mrs. is about #13 in seniority out of 400 or so teachers so will not under any circumstances face a lay off.

Sorry it seems my intent was not clear. I didn't mean it's funny to lose your job, both my wife and I face that possibility next year, I was being sarcastic about the proffessor saying that you need some kind of "permanent income like a teacher" or words to that effect. Given that with the teaching layoffs there is no such thing as "permanent income".

AZ did away with teacher seniority which means my wifes thirteen years in the profession counts for nothing. Arizona is something of a special case. While I am normally one who favors small and limited government I recognisz that you reach a point of diminishing returns. Here it seems most of the legal inhabitants are so anti-government they are happy to damage an already poor educational system even further to satisfy their neanderthal leanings.
