Staining a Fence

I'm off from school for a week and my wife has assigned me to stain a cedar fence he had installed last summer.

It's about 600 sq feet.

I was hoping to rent a sprayer, but the rental place told me they are set-up for latex (as are most other places) since the oil based requires too much equipment cleaning.

I called another place and said they would rent it if it was water based stain.

My immediate thought it too let the fence fade out, but wife says NO!!

Ack.

It is easy... Act like you are having the best time doing it. When the neighborhood kids come around, don't let them help until they beg to.

Then sit back and relax!

Go ahead and rent the sprayer and use the water-based latex...you'll be able to knock in out in an afternoon.

Can't describe the fun I had staining this playset and the 100-ft fence behind it with a paintbrush!!!

Have fun!

Go down to the local pawn shop and buy an old Wagner power sprayer.
You spray while the wife follows along behind with the big brush to smooth things out as/if needed.

Or, just you with sprayer in right hand – brush in left.

When done – throw it all away.

Looks great G!

I've heard the retail grade sprayers are nearly worthless, so renting a commercial grade is the way to go.

Are there any disadvantages to using water-based stain?

Putting water based products on top of oil based products can sometimes be a bit of a nightmare... have you ever gotten emulsion too close to your oil based gloss?

If you go for a water based product I'd talk to the manufacturer to make sure you're not going to run into any peeling off problems.

Consider applying the oil based stain with a roller. With a long handled roller you can apply a lot of material in a hurry.

Be sure to pressure wash the fence first and let dry for a couple of days (cleans off dirt/mildew). You can apply stain with a pump weed sprayer, no need for a power sprayer.

staining a ceder fence

First off, I am sealing my decks to make them water and weather resistant. Cedar, like you said will naturally turn gray over time. Everyting I have been reading about staining outdoor wood is that you don't want to use an oil based stain/sealer because the oil invites microbes, ie, fungi and moss and mold. What I have been using and really like is a product some friends who stained their cedar fence and decks used. It's called FLOOD CWF-UV. It's a clear coat water based product, so it is easy to clean up. That's my 2 cents. Good luck,

I was wondering about the pressure wash situation.

The fence is only 9 months old and is mildew free, do I still need to p.w.??

Rolling it won't work because it's not flat, so the sprayer is a great idea.

thanks!

Pressure Washer

Too bad you are in MN or I'd load ya my Karcher PW. Did my friends Deck before stain/seal and it made a ton of difference, the amount of unseen mold/crud was amazing and it really made the stain take hold.

You will have to allow a day or two (unless its really warm) for it to dry fully.

Did the MIL's porch, stoop, windows, garage and patio last weekend...so now she has put me back in the will, but in expo marker of course!

If you pressure wash the fence you'll need to let it dry longer than the time you have off. That could be good or bad.
