Health insurance cost increases

Our Anthem Blue Cross HMO health insurance just increased by $227 per month to $1365 per month for a family of 3. How does this compare to what other people are paying?

!!!!!!....$1365 a month, that is more than people even make per month at minimum wage. I could not even come close to affording that. Spending $$$ like that on healthcare is why our economy is so messed up. It can't keep going like that forever.

Just another hidden cost of illegals.

They use hospital emergency rooms for the primary care. They actually bankrupted our local county hospital.

Costs are pretty simple. Most ER visits start at $300 and go up rapidly.
Primary cares start ~$35.

And some wonder why I am so adamant about NOO Amnesty for any reason.

I don't see how anyone can afford that, even with a decent income. $16,380 a year, that's nuts!

Kerry,
That's pretty high! In what state do you live?

After I sold my ownership stake in my business (a nursing home) I had to search for a family policy as I personally was previously covered under the company plan and my wife and 2 sons were covered under a plan we had to purchase separately. The cost for single coverage under the business was about $400/month as I remember. the policy we were buying for my wife and 2 sons cost about $700/month or so. so trying to cut down on that $1100/month health insurance premium I went searching for a high deductible plan. Was able to find a plan administered by Blue Cross for $330/month BUT it comes with a $3000 deductible. We have to pay $3000 before they pay the first dollar but overall it's still better than $1100/month.

Unfortunately, Obama and his henchmen in congress have now decided that I shouldn't be allowed to choose to have that high of a deductible even if I can afford it, so if the healthcare bill stands as it's written, sometime within the next couple years I'll be paying a lot more for health insurance since I'll have to buy a plan that pays for more than I want or need. THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME SO MUCH $$$, MR. PRESIDENT!!

Of course, if you are having to purchase insurance in the individual market like me, it's all about your health conditions. Thankfully, I had lost a lot of weight in the previous two years so my family was able to qualify for reasonably low rates. If you have any health issues at all, your premium will be high.

Good luck.

I am totally with you on that. Just one more reason to get rid of the Illegals.

I have personally seen that abuse of the ER by them, myself.

Since the rising of HC costs was used as the lever to pass the recent legislation, it is interesting to observe that all analysis I have seen since then says that the Bill will NOT stop rising costs. So what are we paying for?
Answer--Crisis-style politics as usual.

Kerry--that increase really inhales quickly. Do you have any other options?

Last time around (Jan 1), Horizon BC of NJ charged us these:
Family 13,166; H/W 9,316; P/C 7,897; S 4,375. All figures are annual. 2,500 deductible. $30/50 OV co-pays. Max out of pocket in network is 4,500. NO DRUG COVERAGE.
The firm has an HRA plan which pays the first 3,500. So the max OOP is 1,000.
23 employees covered in our group. Premiums increased 21% from 2009.

It's a plan for CO state employees and we have to purchase either this plan or Kaiser. The school pays about 2/3 of that premium. It's about a 20% increase over last year. It's an HMO plan so no deductibles but pretty high co-pays in my opinion. I had to see a chiropractor last year. Co-pay was $25. I asked how much BC paid the chiropractor on top of my co-pay--$10.

I will soon have to get my own health insurance and have resigned myself to paying for most of my own medical care out of pocket. The only coverage I've seen that I can easily afford is for catastrophic coverage.

in my opinion, deductibles and copays should be higher than most are.

the idea that going to the doctor or hospital is virtually without cost for many people is one of the reasons costs are so high.

everyone says to doctor, "hey, do whatever you want" i'm not paying for it

don't get me wrong, i appreciate healthcare and when i had emergency gall bladder surgery earlier this year, i was glad, but i was also very aware, that it was going to cost me $3000 and wanted out of the hospital as quickly as i could with the least amount of treatment that get me well.

Can't agree with that. Looked more closely at the plan. They have raised the chiropractor co-pay to $50 which means that my co-pay this year is $15 more than the total amount the chiropractor was paid last year! My hospital co-pay is $500 PER DAY! Outpatient surgery (what--maybe fix an ingrown tonail?)--$400 copay. Deliver of a baby--$500 copay PER DAY. Urgent care--$60 copay. Substance abuse treatment inpatient--$500 copay PER DAY. Eye exam--$50 copay. Emergency room--$200 copay. Prescription copays--$15, $40, $60 or 30% of the cost. Last time I went to the pharmacist he told me the copay was higher than the cost of the drugs, so just buy the drugs outright.
All those costs when we are already paying $1365 per month. It's mind boggling.
It looks to me as if for all intents and purposes, what is billed as an HMO has become roughly a catastrophic health insurance plan with the costs of an HMO.
I'd like to know the average cost for Canadians. Anyone Canadians interested in posting numbers?
