Question for the Navy folks here

Do they use money on a ship like the USS Nimitz?

What's to buy?

Do they have ATM's on board? Or do they have to use the ATM's in the foreign ports?

I'm an old salt, but sure, they use money on ships. Lots to buy. They have ships stores cigarettes, clothes, probably cd's etc. Then there's the g-dunk for snacks & candy.
We were paid in cash actually, but most guys had allotments set up to have some of their money sent or deposited elsewhere...with the wife for instance.

Then too, there's always gambling, and now there are women on carriers.

I'm sure it's all changed now tho. Shoot, they even have phones in passageways to make calls stateside.

I heard that that is how they honor ships that served with distinction. They use them for target practice.

I suppose distinction means the ship saw action somewhere.

The rest gets sold to Mexico, Argentina, etc.

Is this true?

Dunno how the Navy does things, but folks heading to and from Afghanistan get an "Eagle Card," onto which you can load cash for use at the BX/PX, approved AAFES vendors, etc...

Ben, here's some info on US Navy Ship's Stores. I'm sure they sell ipods by the hundreds on cruises. Lots of free time on a ship.
I forgot about the barber shop.
Laundry was free. (and rightfully so)

The ships are going to a cashless system. Should be in place on all ships by now. You get an "ATM" card that you can have loaded by the money people and use that. They are for shipboard systems only, you cannot use them in off ship ATM's. They are coded and ship specific too, so if you transfer to another ship, you get a new card.

Life goes on. What's new becomes old.

When the America was decommissioned, her Veterans Association tried to get her saved as a museum. They were not successful. The Navy wanted to test a carrier's ability to withstand damage for the new class of carriers being developed.

The association also lobbied hard to get the lead ship of the class named USS America. Unfortunately, just before the Secretary of the Navy was to name the ship, Gerald Ford died and Rep.politics intervened and the lead ship was named USS Gerald R. Ford. (I guess that's better than John Stennis)

But the Navy dragged her out & blasted her for about two weeks with everything they had (ours and theirs). Then, they sent her to the bottom with preset charges.

Leaving Philadelphia and heading out to sea for the last time.

She rests where she lived. In deep water.

Largest warship ever sunk.

Seeing a proud old ship go down is heart breaking. Especially when one ponders all the time spent by engineers with slide rules on drafting tables.

Yeah it is. The command ship for this sinkex was the USS Trenton. As a final salute to the USS America, Trenton's crew "manned the rails" when the America went under.

Forever frozen in time.
