w123 and w126 part swap

I own a 81 300D with 220,000 and I am casually looking for a good deal. I would like to use my current car as a parts car... should I stay away from any later models then?

I'd say you have maybe 15 to 20% if the mechanical parts that interchange but also in some cases are actually different.
