When I went to insure my 1985 2.3-16, I ran into the same issue, but there'n no policy against insuring grey market cars, it just needs to be done outside of the normal way, since their software, like many, will reject the VIN. So I suggest you speak to someone else at the agent's office, since no national insurance carrier has a policy to not insure grey market vehicles.

This may be nieve but how do they even know it's gray market? My insurance company just wants the VIN and the date.

Do they run the VIN or something and that tells them it's gray market? I had no trouble insuring my Swiss imported UNIMOG with my regular insurance co. but I don't think it meets the definition of gray market.

Yes, they run the VIN to make sure they're insuring the proper car and applying the correct rate. There's a bit of an underwriting difference between a vanilla W204 C300 and an AMG C63.

They called their under writers and said sorry no good. I have my 72 with a classic car Insurance company I guess I have to put this one on the same policy.

After 35 years of funky cars. Only one Ins company turned down a car and that was Mercury. Try another one.

I had the same issue when shopping for insurance. When I mention the 190 is a gray market, I am told no dice. I have been with State Farm for 20 years or so mainly because they give me the best rate and cover the 190.

State Farm covers my Euro. The vin confuses the hell out of them though. For a while, I was having to send them a picture of the vin plate every time it renewed, but eventually we got them to just keep the picture and a letter of explanation in the file.

I have my 84 euro insured with state farm. I asked them up front about it being euro. They said, what is an equivalent us spec car. I said 300d so they call it a 300d for rates.

Usually euro vins are different than US vins. The letters in a vin all stand for something in the US system. What they stand for in the US system isn't necessarily what they stand for in another countries system. A friend had a skyline and whenever you put the vin into a decoder it came back as like a 1980 or 1982 because the Japanese letter for 1998 was different than the US letter for 1998. So you call your insurance and say, it is 1987 Mercedes Benz Staton Wagon and their system says your VIN is BS they get confused.

I once had a 1987 Sterling sedan (made in England by Rover) that, after Sterling pulled out of the US, was an orphan car. My insurance company said they do not insure orphans.

But since I had been with them for about 30 years they could write me a state minimum policy only, so that is what I did.

Their story was that if I had full coverage they had no way to buy repair parts since there was no dealer network to buy them from.
