Crap this rust

I've been attacking my rust problem on Benzy for the past two days. Today I discovered what looks like holes covered in Bondo in ALL of the wheel wells.

Someone had put those stupid chrome covers on at one point.

Fun. I've battled rust on my older Benzes an spend a LOT of time and effort on it.

My advice? Don't fight it, you never beat it...only delay it in increments proportional to the amount of time, effort, money, sweat and blood you put into it.

Try and source new aftermarket fenders and have them painted. You can install yourself. Done correctly, they will last several years. I've done this to an E320 in our extended family, and Chad300 posted a thread on some great work he has done on a W123 I think (replaced panels as well).

If you are determined to tackle the rust, remove as much as you can, weld in new metal and use minimal bondo, and treat with POR15. Good luck!

This reminds me...I need to book my GL450 for a Krown treatment soon...never too early to protect a vehicle.

The inner fenders (behind the wheels) and forward frame are famous rust areas. Since its mostly hidden I have had good luck with fiberglass patch material and then truck bed liner spray to protect it. Its important to clear away whatever rust you find or it keeps growing.

I feel like a lot of northerners (southerners don't understand) agree that you just have to accept that you never will defeat it, it's just a constant battle. Once you tackle most of it, and you stay on top of it, I think it's just like one more maintenance item. I wouldn't give up or just try to delay it, just continue to fix it.

Yep, that's pretty much it. Whenever I get a new (used) Benz, I thoroughly clean it then have it Krown protected. They have the best rust protection in the business, IMO. My local Mercedes dealer also recommended them and said it will not void the warranty whatsoever. You've made a perfect analogy - rust protection and treatment is essentially another ongoing regular maintenance item where you have winter and salted roads.

My '79 300TD was Zeibarted after in came from SoCal. The PO also repainted and did some other minor cosmetic work.

It's still rust free (maybe seen 1/2 a winter), but I don't want to use it as a daily winter car. Besides starting issues at -10F temps, the rust will catch up with it. Once that happens, it'll essentially a worthless car. No one wants a 31 year-old rusty diesel Mercedes, except maybe for mechanical or interior parts. No point in spending $4k on rust repair and a so-so paint job. It's a shame really, as I'd love to drive the thing year 'round.

The plot thickens...

The entire passenger front fender is a repaint. I've spent the better half of an hour removing a top coat of silver and two undercoats of palomino.

What saddens me is the rust at every major point is from Bondo that was stuck on. I look like a hazmat guy with my goggles and mask.

At least the front will look good when i'm done. I've been cleaning out the jack points as well. It's bad, but I caught it at the best possible time.
