I really like the British trilogy....Octane, Classic and sports car, and Classic and thoroughbred. My favorite us mag is Sports Car Market. My traditional fav is Road and Track but now there, my favorite part is Peter Egan's column which I generally read first.

I also take Cavallino, a Ferrari rag. It is very very well done and has a lot about the older cars which I like.

When I was a juvinile I loved Car and Driver, but now it seems too juvenile!

I recently picked up a 1961 issue of Sports Car Illustrated, the for runner of car and driver. It has a host of great articles including a review of Phil Hill's year driving a Ferrari (the year before he became champion), a wonderful article on Bonneville the year Mickey Thompson ran 406 in his Challenger beating out the superfunded Donald Cambell and a couple of others (one died there), an article on a bonneville car powered by a hot Falcon six (shaped like a punkin seed), an article about Jack Brabham testing the three liter Cooper F1 car at the speedway, a road test of the Ferrari GTE and other great stuff.

The advertisements are wonderful including a lotus 7 and other really great stuff.

Sam Posey piece in Road and Track about gullwing

I got my Road and track yesterday and immediately noted on the cover that there was an article in it by Sam Posey entitled "My Gullwing". I like Sam and gullwings so I turned to it first.

Turns out Sam was 14 in 1958 and his father had been killed in ww2 so it was just he and his mom. Sam was a budding young car head and had read all about Mercedes successes in racing including the 1955 Mille Miglia which Moss won in a Mercedes 300 SLR, a fire breathing lighweight version of the 300 running a modified version of the F1 straight eight engine.

Sam lived on a farm in Connecticut near John Fitch the legendary racing driver who had won the GT class in the 55 Mille driving a stock gullwing. One day Sam was in the local benz dealer and spotted this gullwing which was available for $2,500. (That would have bought many different new cars in '59) but Sam saw it as a bargain and immediately lobbied his mother to allow him to buy it. (Apparently they were fairly well off).

They discussed it thoroughly and his mom said something like this..."If your dad were alive he would have let you buy it so I will too". (I wanna meet his mom!)

So he drove it around the backroads of connecticut and through the fields learning to hold a powerslide, etc.

When he turned 16 he got his license and began driving in actual races.

Through the years he used the car as a means to meet John Fitch and John became his informal mentor in racing.

Sam named his son John (he did not say if it was for Fitch) and picked him up from the hospital in it. The baby liked the feel of the old gullwing so it got a lot of miles puttting young John to sleep as an infant.

Sam held onto the old gullwing and one day was a little startled when a fellow offered him enough to buy a decent house for it, but he held onto it.

And so now he still has it and his son is old enough to drive it well too.

And they are worth about a half mill.....not a bad return on an investment of $2,500.

If you get a chance, read his piece, this is just a very condensed version of it. It has a lot of rich detail.

PS a note about John Fitch:
He was a top flight driver in international competition who retired from professional racing after being in the 1955 LeMans race when the horrible accident occurred which killed a hundred or so spectators. He went on to devote his life to designing safety devices including the barrels you see around bridge abutments, etc. He is now about 92 years young and still is driving, having made an appearance at one of the historic auto thingies (like Goodwood reival) in the last year.

A wonderful man to has as a neighbor and mentor.

I read C/D regularly but I agree with Tom, it has begun to seem a bit more juvenile lately. Still, I'll keep reading them as long as John Phillips III is contributing.

Lately I've picked up the odd issue of TopGear Magazine, a UK import for us. Bloody pricey for a magazine, but it is a great read.

I will second that !

I have even appeared in an issue. .

I advertise in GRM, and work for a group that does as well.

Classic Motorsports is also a good read.

I like Octane as well, but it actually depends on the issue. I used to read the Classic and Thouroghbred magazines but at $10 a copy I had to stop.

My favorites now are Hemming's Sports and Exotic Car and Classic Motorsports.

This forum has replaced magazines for me... Info is more relevant to my car, and the price is right!

Now if I had an ipad and could take PeachParts to the can with me... Life would be complete!

I remember magazines, I think I saw my grandfather reading one in the early 60s.

I gotta say, I still prefer a book to an ebook. And, I really like paper. I believe I'm somewhat of an old soul in other ways too, I mean even besides the cars I like to drive...
