S350 BlueTec coming to the states.

The S-class available in the States with a diesel engine again. Don't think it will need Diesel-Purge. Autoblog.

I used to be really really excited about the new clean diesel technology. then, a diesel technician informed me that the new IP's use 5 and 6 injection cycles which complicates the design. he regularly sees failures at 100K miles which, of course keeps him in business. the old style IPs were far more reliable. with complexity comes less reliability.

on the other hand, I'm sure they are a very impressive car and capable of good fuel mileage along with impressive power.

Saw that BMW got a 635 Diesel in Europe and that even Bentley is contemplating a diesel.

A diesel is a diesel. a diesel is hard to argue with as far as longevity and torque. it appears some of the major car makers are seeing diesel technology as the wave of the future. then there is the smell of diesel fuel.........the women I've met prefer it to cologne.

Ummm, think I'll stick with pre-07 emissions diesels. I worked for Freightliner for 12 years, and I know how a lot of that new emissions control hardware is set up to work - and IMHO it's just trouble waiting to happen, as far as maintenance and repair bills.

Those 5 or 6 injections per combustion event? If you do a little research, you'll find out that most of those injections occur AFTER combustion has taken place - they're used to put a calculated amount of unburned fuel into the exhaust gases, such that it will burn in the exhaust system and burn off the soot in the exhaust particulate filter - less expensive than putting a separate injector in the exhaust system ahead of the particulate filter for the same purpose, as Caterpillar and Detroit Diesel have done on their Class 8 engines and VW has done in the past.

That's the reason on the newer TDI's that VW says you can't use above a certain percentage of biodiesel, or swore it off altogether - they use the same multiple injection event routine, and have carefully calculated just how much regular D2 needs to be injected. Biodiesel has a different flash point and viscosity - use too high a blend of BioD and it'll simply wash down the cylinder walls and contaminate the engine oil, instead of flashing off and going out the exhaust, from these post-combustion injections.

People are always scared of new tech. Soon it will be the only option if you want a new diesel, so we'll have to get used to it. As more cars use those systems more people will understand them and more people will be able to work on them. Welcome to automotive progress. Diesel has just been the same for a LONG time. This is kind of like all the people who think carbs are better than EFI.

New tech that works better than the old, ie Common Rail Injection, that serves a useful purpose, and improves fuel economy, performance, vehicle longevity, and decreases maintenance costs is one thing.

New tech simply to fulfill a requirement some govt bureaucrats pullled out of their wazoo with no science to back it up, decreases fuel economy, performance, vehicle longevity, and entails increased maintenance costs - is something else altogether.

Too bad. The world is trying to move forward, emissions is part of that. Is isn't 1969 anymore the days of big blocks with no emissions is over. Bluetec, multi-cycle injection, catalytic converters, is all the way it has to be. We the consumers best get used to it or stop driving cars. I won't be driving a 1980s Mercedes for the next 70 years. So I am willing to accept new laws, new standards, and new technology.

I'm not speaking directly at you retmil.
