Jeez, why do you hate Taylor Swift so much? Kanye made an ass of himself. Beyonce sure thought so. She brought TS up on stage later so she could get the props she deserved and had been sorta deprived of.

Back when I was at the peak of my small time stardom in Seattle, a few guys just hated my guts. I'm sure my ego got a bit swollen and that I wasn't always the most lovable guy back then but these guys were just obsessed. It mostly played out in that coffee house I hung at. Great open mic every Monday, it was a serious hangout. Large for a coffee house, it would hold about 150 during the performances.

If I had a good night, and some ladies were borderline swooning, these guys would be shooting daggers at me with their eyes. Poor things.

I wouldn't sneer at that ... I'm definitely not a Taylor Swift fan but I wouldn't write off her talent. She has a nice voice, although with a lot of young pop stars it's hard to tell what's highly edited and what isn't. Even in "live" performances. Personally I find her songs a bit grinding ... but mostly because I prefer harder or darker material, or a more complex style, if you will. I also prefer male voices, albeit usually falsettos (Matt Bellamy, Chris Martin, Thom Yorke, James Blunt). Lady GaGa is actually an exception to that (along with a few others). While odd, she has a very powerful voice ... not that I'm a huge fan but I dig whatever they play on the radio. You should post your Taylor Swift cover on here ... I might like it better than TS!

Squabble, I'm not a metal fan but I understand your POV there. A lot of people write it off as wild screaming but some of it is pretty intricate. Not really my taste but I wouldn't knock it. I was watching some Rock Am Ring footage yesterday and I don't think I could have survived that crowd. Funniest tidbit from that show: Muse's UFO blocking MTV's streaming signal during Slayer's performance. Oops. Gotta watch where you park your UFO, boys.

Now I've done it. I'm going to have to post a vid of me covering a chick song. How did I get into this? Maybe this will light a fire under my ass and I'll look for a good lady music partner who needs me to back her up on the song and sing harmony. It might take a while but the gauntlet has been laid down. I go now, to gird up my loins.

Sorry cmac. I'm an odd person. People bug me in the oddest ways...I'm kind of a misanthropist. Which is odd because I have TONS of friends...and am actually pretty darn friendly after a bit...I'm usually happy-go-lucky, but part of me is like "UGH, I HATE this" ...and that includes country music....alright. Forgive me. And also, hear me out. I dislike the southern accent...I have no problem with people from the south...but...their voices aren't pleasant in my ears. Kind of like how I don't like the feel of velvet or corduroy....

I was stuck in line at an airport with this couple from Texas, and they were REALLY wonderful people. I loved what they had to say, and how they phrased things. Very interesting....but ...their voices....I dunno. Obviously, if I was listening to them and enjoying the conversation after so long, I got over it for the time being. But...you know...eh. Not a fan of country music for that reason...the sound of the singer's voice. Not how high pitched or low...but the accent. I know...I feel horrible saying it....because its really not fair. But it turns me off.

But that's not why I don't like Taylor Swift. It's a bit of a contributing factor, but also, it was from a couple of years ago, it was a dumb thing, but I didn't like some stuff that was going on with her that was in the press. But its all weird pop teenager-y stuff that I wasn't happy about. Whatever.

Can't wait to see the video on youtube! I'll probably like it better than Taylor's version. Here's how to get you on youtube, you go play for a crowd, and then have someone video tape you, and then you put it up! I'd go do it...but...I'm a "bit" far away to come find you and get a good video of you to put up!

Don't write off Lady Gaga so quick. She has an incredible voice and spent a LOT of time working on the bottom rungs in bars and clubs around New York.

She does write all of her own music and refuses to lip sync. Lady Gaga (with all of the clothing oddities) is an incredible musician.

Not all pop music is alike. Just because one may not like it doesn't make it manufactured or similar to the other bits thrown out these days.

I actually hesitate to call Gaga "pop" ... yes, she is popular, but she definitely goes her own way. She isn't the same kind of "pop" as Justin Beiber or Adam Lambert, in other words. Like I said, I'm not a huge GaGa fan, but she's an intriguing and talented musician, and is a refreshing change from most of what's on the radio. You know what I love (random) ... the way British people say "Lady Gaga" ... "GarGar."

I can actually relate pretty well to that. The few times I've seen Miley Cyrus on the telly, my back teeth stand on edge. Just bizarre, like an utterly manufactured personality. What got me about Taylor Swift was that video. Her face was so believable and in both roles! The hot chick looked like a black widow vixen, just totally stuck up, and the mousy little blond girl in the band actually seemed sweet and unappreciated. The melody is sorta catchy but it is a tad goofy. I do want to learn it though because people often dig a familiar melody played by someone who sounds really different that the one who made it popular. I've got a CD by a Scottish guy, Dick Gaughan and one of the tunes is the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." Just sounds wild being sung slower by one guy with a guitar.

One song I love doing cause no guys, I swear, no guys do it is Joni Mitchell's "Blue Boy." It works just fine as a guy song and it is one sexy tune. It's on her "Ladies of the Canyon" album, one of the most perfect albums of all time, for me anyway.

I was just looking for that and I found this one instead from her album "Blue." Lord have mercy, no woman has ever moved me like Joni. Her later jazz stuff didn't thrill me most of the time but oh man, in the day, she was it. This one has to be the coolest song ever done on dulcimer:

She writes almost all her own stuff. She is the real thing. Carrie Underwood is not, IMHO.

No way do I take this stuff THAT seriously. I've never really tried "California," the song that is. I just now tried and if I sing in a lower key I can sorta hit that note but I don't think the song would work for me that well. The more I try it I'm not sure the song in the OP really will either but if I get it down the next Taylor Swift look-a-like wannabe I run into will maybe ask me to be her partner, and I'll say no more on that. :cool:

The second link was a medley of two songs, it's the second one, "Blue Boy" that I used to sing. The second verse is pretty cool.

I was looking for more stuff and found this duet between her and James Taylor on a neat song of his I used to do. Good harmony mostly, she got a bit adventurous towards the end. Oh well, it's easy to do, take a risk that doesn't quite work out that is. Really good harmony takes some serious work.

Carrie Underwood doesn't do much for me either. I like Swift's energy, man, a lot better. She seems to be highly driven and from a young age. I've read some remarks about her only being where she is onna account of her rich daddy, and while her family did seem to make sacrifices for her career, even moving to Nashville while she was in her teens, that alone is no guarantee.

That is a good Strait tune - I like some of the newer country. One thing that bugs me with so much of the new country, and TS does it eary on in this song, is that little gravely voice affect that she throws in before the word "I", sort of starting off low and jumping up to the note that is wanted. It's just way overdone in country.

Definitely agree, but most music was once pop music so Lady Gaga does fall into her own category.

She is a lot of fun to listen to and her concerts are entertaining to say the least.

The brits are all over the place with their Queen's English so who knows what they are really trying to say :P

I've heard several tunes from Taylor Swift, wife's a fan, I was'nt that moved. It's not that I dislike it, I just didn't like it too much. Sounds like so much other corporate nashville country music. If you get the chance give a listen to Alison Krause and Union Station, more bluegrass as opposed to country but definitely worth hearing, at least give it a try. If that doesn't work for ya...there's always Patsy.

The more I listen to Swift, the more she's sounding a bit too formulaic and poppy. The song in the OP is fun, the video brings up some high school nostalgia but she's no Emmylou Harris, not yet anyway.

Alison Krause is good, she's been on Prairie Home Companion at least once that I know of. They have some good bluegrass acts on that show - one young band, Nickle Creek, has been on several times and they're pretty good.
