California SB1453 wants to pimp your car's license plate into digital advertising!
http://losangeles.bizjournals.com/losangeles/stories/2010/06/21/daily6.html
Thanks to this guy, Curren Price (D-L.A.): SENATOR PRICE’S SB 1453 TO REQUIRE THE DMV TO INVESTIGATE THE UTILIZATION OF ELECTRONIC DIGITAL LICENSE PLATES IN THE STATE PASSES OUT OF SENATE For Immediate Release Contact: Fahizah Alim (916) 651-4026 Sacramento - SB 1453, authored by Senator Curren D. Price Jr., gives the Department of Motor Vehicles the authority to investigate the emerging Digital Electronic License Plate (DELP) technology to understand its functionality, safety and administrative applications. The bill passed out of the Senate on May 28, 2010 on a vote of 25-0. “This legislation provides a unique opportunity for California to work in partnership with some of the state’s most innovative enterprises to rethink how we can use our most basic assets to achieve greater efficiencies and cost savings, while generating new revenues for the state,” said Senator Price. The bill authorizes the DMV to partner with innovation companies for the purpose of researching, developing, and implementing new technology at no additional costs to the DMV or State. It directs the DMV to submit an interim and final report to the Legislature on of the utilization of digital electronic license plates with specified areas of discussion and to conduct “real world” trials to gather data on the ability for DELP technology to deliver cost savings, workflow efficiencies and revenue generation. “State governments are facing unprecedented budget shortfalls, and are actively rethinking the use of existing state assets to create new ongoing revenue opportunities,” said Senator Price. Adoption of this emerging technology could potentially bring significant benefits to the State of California and its taxpayers by realizing significant cost savings by using digital electronic license plate technology to streamline distribution, activation, and registration of license plates. “Finally,” said Senator Price, “having digital electronic license plate technology developed and engineered in California, would create new jobs in technology, sales/marketing and service fields. These jobs could employ people having a broad range of educational and vocational skill levels. “ Senator Price also noted that with this new technology, critical real-time traffic and public safety information such as Amber alerts and emergency traffic updates can be broadcast to the plates during exigent situations. Having digital electronic license plate technology developed and engineered in California, would also create new jobs in technology, sales/marketing and service fields. These jobs could employ people having a broad range of educational and vocational skill levels. http://dist26.casen.govoffice.com/index.asp?Type=B_PR&SEC={8097E0FE-73EF-4295-951A-19952668C7C4}&DE={040A5583-1CFE-4A92-BCDD-23A860303102} |

Great Now before you crash you will be able to see flashing neon message of who can offer you the cheapest funeral package. They stopped the use of cell phones but now they approve making the license plates flashing messages like billboards? Humans...who care about the humans, lets generate revenue, the more of them die the better for the funeral business and the less money government need to spend on services for the very same people who paid taxes to them.
It is not enough that you need to pay attention just to avoid all the idiots on the road, now lets them become even more distracted by all this. Talking on your cell can get you killed, what about looking at the flashing neon license plate on the car in front of you?? That's OK, this is allowed..... stupid just stupid. I am sure the insurance companies will jump on that as well....just wait and see....Our insurance will go up because of the increasing numbers of crashes caused by someone reading the message and slams at you in the Interstate. "I am sorry officer, I was looking at the saving offered by....."

I don't want to defend this stuff but I believe they said the ad would only come onto the plate after the vehicle had been still for some length - 45 seconds perhaps. Perhaps advertising for a parking lot crowd. A tad bit weird, for sure.

Two thoughts...
Actually three 1) What happens to black and blue plate cars? 2) Watch what happens when somebody hacks the plates - also could a hacker change the tag number and therefore defeat the purpose of a plate? 3) Wait until Cali decides a 6x12 inch plate is not big enough for efficient advertising and mandates a 3foot x 5 foot license plate! oh and one more thing... where will it get its power? from your car battery? What happens when you park at LAX for two weeks while you are on vacation? dead battery? GEEZE LOUIZE!

If your battery gets too weak to run ads all night long, your tabs renewal fee will go up.

For a lot of reason that can be researched on the net....
These would be illigal in Texas and Oklahoma. One big reason is that they might cover up any part of the plate. Even the dealer plate surrounds in Texas are illigal if they cover up any part of the plate that provides information, such as cutting off part of the word TEXAS. This could get complicated quick; or every state might go for it if there is a buck to be made. |
