Shark finning laws

Hawaii has passed a law which prohibits the sale/trade/possession of shark fins.
I lived in the CNMI on and off for more than a decade and started a campaign to have the same law enacted in the CNMI. Here's the FB page Please join and help us make this happen.

Thumbs up

Good too see/hear!

Loblaws, a large national food chain in Canada, has recently introduced limits to the seafood it sells. They are the largest buyer/seller of seafood in Canada. They've immediately banned all shark and a few other select species. They are aiming to phase out all threatened and/or environmentally damaging species by 2013, as per their target -

"all the seafood sold in our stores will come from sustainable sources by the end of 2013"

http://www.oceansfortomorrow.ca/en/

It's a good start, IMO. They've begun and you can see tags at the stores where certain species used to be.

Banning shark meat outright - not just fins - was a great first move.

It's more than just about the sharks. In Minneapolis we just had one lady convicted of smuggling and selling exotic animal parts. I understand, it's medicinal, it's culture, but it needs to stop. It's not something you would expect coming from a culture which likes its animals slaughtered and dressed in the Confucian tradition.

Rhino horns, elephant tusks, snake gall bladder, sharks fins, tiger parts, sea turtles, etc.

Shameful.

The bill passed the house and Senate with different versions so they will be reconciled shortly. The Gov has indicated he will sign it when it comes to his desk. Here are just some of the reports from the news. I could not be more stoked!- well I guess I could and will be when it becomes law.

Since then CNMI passed the law Guam followed suit, California followed suit, Washington State and Oregon also, and now the Marshall Islands have created the worlds largest area which does not allow commercial fishing for sharks. The world is coming together to stop the slaughter of nearly 73 million shark a year which primarily is used for shark fin soup.

Good for you. I have very little tolerance for the Japanese and the way they're raping the oceans for their bizarre tastes.

Interesting LA Times op-ed from this summer:

http://www.apaoha.org/page6/files/The%20taste%20of%20extinction%20LAT.pdf

Racist sharks

"Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), a member of the Appropriations Committee, which will consider the bill Aug. 15, has said that the ban would unintentionally discriminate against Chinese Americans."

Notify the press cuz I'm down with MTU on an issue.

The discrimination against Chinese/Americans crap comes up all the time. Oh yeah, let's make special allowances for various ethnic groups to slaughter endangered species onna account that they've done it for years.

Yeah so what Ted Lieu? Banning rhinoceros horn and tiger bone sales also discriminates against Chinese Americans.

WTF? Change people. Viagra and Cialis man.
