Question about external cd/dvd for notebook

I have no idea what to look for. I keep seeing Rewritable Drive,DVD writer,DVD burner. All i want to do is to play a DVD and a CD.I need to install a wireless mouse.

You may not even need the CD for the mouse.
Try it.

My Bluetooth mouse went in without a CD.

Do you have a PC you can copy the CD to then transfer to the notebook.
Either via network or usb stick.

Also check the Mouse manufacturers website, they should have the driver there for download. I usually check there for newer one's anyhow.

Do you just want to install a driver? If so, the advice above is good, just go to the manufacter's website and download it. If you want to watch movies, go to newegg.com and do a search. The external dvd's run around $50. If you need help picking one, let me know and I'll send a link.

I would like that.I have seen them for 35.00,but i don't know which one to buy. I only want to play a DVD and CD's.
BTW: The mouse has a small USB that plugs into the mouse.

Sounds like my old mouse (just a few months a go), I like that mouse very much.
The USB bud can be stored inside the Mouse.

I changed to a Bluetooth version, that way my headset and mouse can share a single USB port.
Not 100% thrilled with the Bluetooth mouse, seems to take a lot to wake it up after you don't use it for a while. Once it's awake again seems fine.

My new laptop didn't have built in Bluetooth.

Your laptop doesn't have a CD / DVD built in ??
Is it a Netbook or a laptop ?

Good

Here's a link to NewEgg, hopefully right to the DVD section

http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=420&name=External-CD-DVD-Drives

Several things to consider :

Do you need a burner ? Most are though, I have never burned a DVD, even CDs only a few.

I assume you want this for portable use, so look for a slim version.

Consider the one's listed with "No external power". I think there were 2 ASUS one was not a writer.
They are powered through the USB port, this means one less power brick to carry, and it can be used completly portable (although it will drain the laptop battery quicker).

You can look at Tiger, even BestBuy to.
Maybe run though Bestbuy just to get a look at the different styles etc, even if it's not the same model the concepts will be similiar.

Does this get you going in the right direction ??

If you don't have one consider an external hard drive for backup and extra storage.
You can backup the laptop to it just in case.

PS if you have any other questions feel free to ask, include the model number of your laptop just in case too.

Thanks

Do you know why it will only work this way? The bud sticking out of the side gets in the way.

kknudson 07-08-2010 07:45 PM

That bud is the receiver for the mouse.

Hopefully you got one like this (both of mine are roughly this size).

Versus this

These new micro USB buds are a huge improvement over the old style USB receiver that were more like a USB thumb drive.

I leave mine in all the time, it really isn't noticable.

No, the place in the mouse for the bud is just a storage place, so you don't lose it.

It has to be in the notebook to act as the receiver.
