Stay away from this G...

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=280119676&dealer_id=100017284&car_year=2002&rdm=1278456950563&lastStartYear=1981&model=G_CLASSCLASS_SERIES&num_records=25&systime=&make2=&highlightFirstMakeModel=&start_year=1981&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&awsp=false&search_type=both&distance=100&marketZipError=false&search_lang=en&sownerid=88841&showZipError=y&make=MB&keywords_display=&color=&page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&seller_type=b&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=06460&advanced=&end_year=2011&doors=&transmission=&max_price=35000&cardist=53&standard=false

Went and looked it with my friend today, its pretty rough. The rear hatch is rotted out at the bottom, and rust is popping up on a lot of places on the body. The trim along the doors is falling off to. The paint peeled off one of the rear view mirriors, the inside is kind of beat etc. Very disapointed. The owner or whoever was trying to sell it an older guy was also a jerk. He was like it is what it is. Its a $30k car, it shouldn't have a rotted out door. He was totaly not interested in it, he had a buyer with checkbook in hand and wouldn't hang around for more than 10 seconds to say anything.

It looks like it was owned by a slob, the underside is clean so I'm guessing he lived on the water. Had a bunch of records to, the PO spent $6,600 at 47k miles going through it.

Stay away.

The new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited is out - which can be had for close to the same money as that MB SUV.

I don't know what the 'mystique thing' is about a very spartan 'n pricey MB SUV anyways?

Cause the Jeep is a POS.

Besides the G is nicer, it cost over twice as much new.

I've owned one jeep, that was one too many. I don't know if the g-wagon is worthwhile or not; most of them just seem to be used as minivans. I also am going to need something for my wife to drive in the winter, but she actually likes MLs. My daughter is about to get a learner's permit and I don't really want to have any kind of SUV/truck around for her to use. I keep thinking about getting a E320 4matic wagon (my daughter will hate that).

The G's are nice because they are uncommen and quite good offroad. You get the luxury of an S class with the quality of a MB, and the go anywhere ability of a proper offroader. An E320 wagon is far more practical around town, but if you plan to go offroad you need more ground clearance.

Plus they are built in Austria, so the old school MB quality is still their.

As soon as my friend buys his we plan on hitching up a trailer and towing some quads up a logging road.

They're not that uncommon, I keep seeing the same AMG G55s at the local food store. I just can't get very excited about a truck.

Nothing like taking a G out on the rubicon and beating the crap out of it.

Hows this for use?

Yeah, its hard to beat them. A lot of people use them as a minivan, but my friend fully intends to take it off road. He needs a body on frame truck, with proper axles and lockers, he also will only drive a MB so that kind of limits it. ML's and GL's are kind or ruled out, they are ment for wet grass and a bit of snow.

The thing with G's is that old ones cost as much as newer ones. So he figures he might as well buyer a newer one since the 300hp V8 is nice to motivate it along, and the modern creature comforts are nice.

We looked at a 1993 300GD which was mint but the guy wouldn't go below $33k and it had a NA 603 and no AC.

For the same money you can get a 2002/3 with a V8 and good AC.

The nice thing about the G is you can take it out at night and it still looks right, its perfect for the back woods and trendy clubs.

There's nothing wrong with them, but I always get the impression that the drivers are trying too hard to impress someone. Sorta like a hummer for people who actually finished high school.

Oh really? You seem certain about that..... I sold my 8-year old Jeep GC Ltd. having spent zilch on repair bills. One new battery and a new set of wiper blades is all I spent extraneous dollars on - in 8-years.

Doubt that old g SUV could compete with that - at any price.

What it "cost new" means nothing when the repair bills and questionable fuel economy break your budget.

Still rather take/buy a new Jeep GC Ltd. than some old/used overated SUV.

He isn't buying a Jeep. Not even in the same league, the G550 costs $105k new vs $30k for the Jeep. Totaly different vehicals.

"overated SUV"? Tell that to all those military forces around the world that have used it for the last 30 years...

LOL, everyone should be forced to own one jeep so they will appreciate any vehicle that isn't a complete POS.

A G definitely isn't overrated by any means. Unlike most other SUVs it can actually do the things that you often see other lesser SUVs advertised as being capable of. Certainly no other luxury SUV even comes close to matching it's off-road abilities (A Range Rover maybe but that one has way too many quality and electronic issues) Newer G's tend to snap window regulators like there are no tomorow but beyond that they don't have many issues. Take a good look at it's axles and steering system to understand what type of vehicle you're really dealing with.

Now it has been stated that some people use them as mini-vans but that is true of all SUVs.

I'll keep my eyes and ears open as usual. If he's going to off-road remind him that he's definitely going to have to upgrade the tires. I know that the G300D was WAY too slow but would he still be willing to look into grey market?

Not too far from Powerpig that one.... When buying any G you do need to have a degree of patience. There is no doubt that they're rare so you often just have to wait for the right one to come along. Europa also has a 1995 cabrio right now but I have no idea what they want for it.
