The real story is how digital media has completely changed the market for music and movies. Everyone (including prince) is scrambling to find another way to get paid. Most music artists are now making most of their income from performances.

Its been like that for a lonnnng time unless you get a really good lawyer involved and the record companies are willing to gamble on you.

There was a time when recording companies would actually develop a "stable" of artists based on the theory that a small percentage of them would make it big and cover their investment. A few would succeed, the rest would basically have their shot without much risk. For better or worse, that system is gone.

Which is why he is a whiney little sour grapes boy. Prince is the one that is "over", my twenty-something kids get all their music from the net from bands I've never heard of on the radio.

I agree, just looking at where he's coming from. Speaking of radio, that really is over; I'm an old guy and I haven't turned on a radio in 2 or 3 years.

OTOH, prince is getting a bunch of free publicity by making this statement. I wouldn't have known he had a new album if I hadn't seen this story.
