Corvette Lets You Build It...

http://www.examiner.com/x-572-Auto-Review-Examiner~y2010m7d12-Build-your-own-engine-option-available-for-Corvette-buyers-limited-to-Z06-and-ZR1-Corvettes-only

...for a hefty premium. I suppose it covers lodging and air fare, but still. That's expensive, although I like the idea.

That would be pretty cool! Plus, as a dealer option, you can roll it right into your 72 monthly payments.

Nor have a I, I dislike the intangible thing corvettes have become.

$5,800 for someone to hold your hand? That seems like a lot, and +1 on wondering if it affects your warranty haha.

They are the fastest cars for the money you can buy. I'm not a fan of the old ones, but the new ones are not bad.

I don't like the image they give off, I feel like you have to be balding, near 50 and wear gold chains to drive one.

Sort of, the $130k ZR1 is only slightly faster than the $90k GTR with 180 more HP.

Never buy anything if the reason includes the phrase, "for the money." There are dozens of more interesting cars that can be bought for less cash and don't make you look like a DB.

The image seems to be: I'm pushing 60, I'm divorced, I have some viagra in the glove box, I want a super-car but I can afford a real one because of my alimony payments (but most bimbos won't know the difference).

Don't forget a Bluetooth, Corvette Hat, Corvette Windbreaker, and the "MY C5/C6/C5Z/C6Z/Z06/ZR1" vanity plate.

And showing up at autocrosses and being surprised that your 640hp car is beating 105hp miatas.

Or a Porsche 911 GT3, or Aston Martin V8 Vantage or how about AUDI R8 4.2 Quattro?

Maybe but not nearly to the level of those seen behind the wheels of the European sportscars, who also have a propensity to sport large, gold-rimmed sunglasses to complement their pinky rings. And the pretentiousness of the Euro drivers is exponential as well. Douchebaggery is not exclusive to American marques. Hell, the vast majority of the DB's I've met are driving German and Italian cars.

I'm actually more of a fan of the older Vettes. I grew up around them. My father wanted a late 60's coupe so he could throw my brother and I in the back, which was how he ended up with his '66. Many of the folks they met at club functions and meets have become family.

Unlike a number of voices on this forum, there some who want the American automakers to succeed and roll quality cars off the assembly lines. Pollyannish? Maybe. The fact that they are failing on a number of levels, for a number of reasons, doesn't bring pleasure. And the only sportscar we have and have had to root for is the Corvette and yes, there have been some droughts to endure. From the mid-70's through the late-80's it was rough, not a lot to like about them. But I think the fact that even Clarkson actually kinda liked the '09 ZR1, despite a couple gremlins, speaks volumes about the car given his general disdain for anything out of Detroit (or Bowling Green, for that matter). The latest Corvettes are examples that it is possible for America to produce a decent car that competes with some of the world's best at a fraction of the cost.

That said, I do like the pre-emission era corvettes with full bumpers so like what '71 and back? I learned to wrench on a '69 427/435 with ZL1 internals.
