Your call, let me know.

I think some of the more high priced (US versions), had a flash fliter. Sort of like the newer welding helmuts. That is what I remember from the late 80's to early 90's. The Russians have probably intergrated that by now.

I am by no means a gun expert, so I would like to ask a question or two.

Some background....

A friend of mine bought an 8mm Mauser, which I think might be a K98, in the late 70's for $35. This was at a Warehouse Sale for a company called Gibson's Discount (This was at their Garland, Texas, warehouse) which was a large chain in the Southwest. Sam Walton admits that he took much of his theory of discount sales from the Gibson brothers, and I only say this to let you know that GIbson's was as much as a gun dealer then as Walmart is today. They had a sporting goods section, but Gibson's also sold mil-surp guns like Mausers and Lee-Enfields.

At this sale, which I attended with him, the section of the store selling the Mausers would lay out five at a time and when those five were sold they would lay out five more. Most were really only worth $35 as they were really worn out and cracked up. The goal of the 'sale' was to get you into the store and make you stay there while your wife shopped.

Add to all of this that it was rather dark where the guns were being sold so it was hard to check the condition. I had not bought a light, but I did have one of those bent fiber-optic things to check the bore.

After about an hour a group of five came out and one was clearly above the rest. I picked it up and noticed it was stamped 'Loeweberlin 1890', and, by the light of a near-by time-clock, I was able to see that the inside of the barrel looked very good.

It also had numbers that matched on the receiver and the barrel, so I knew that had to be a good sign.

I just called him and he says the receiver is stamped 3814 and the barrel is stamped 814. Under that is a 1400 and under that is a P.

It also has Goew.88 in old German script on the receiver.

My questions on this would be: Anyone know what these numbers mean, and if not, can anyone direct me to a web-site that would be good for decoding these?

There is also an S stamped on the barrel that he already knows means it was Sized to take a longer round than the original.

The few times I fired it I was able to hit a horse-apple at about 30 yards, so it really shoots well. I can't think of anything else that is 120 years old and still works like new.

Just saw this thread. Go to www.gunboards.com - they have a whole Mauser section moderated by the guy who wrote the definitive book on them.

My Mauser is a model 1893 made during the Spanish Civil war and it looks like it was used by both sides and used HARD. It does shoot very well and is more accurate than I am with iron sights. It uses 7.5mm Mauser ammo which is available. Oh the good thing was it cost me $150 at a gun shop a few months ago so there are still bargains out there.

My two French Carbines were made in 1894 and 1896 so I know what you mean about the quality of these 100+ year old guns.

I love the older rifles, my 1911 Swiss rifle is a piece of art. Back than people actualy gave a damn about what they made. Its refreshing in the time of throw away Chinese crap. Back than they were built to last several generations with proper care, heck their military service life was 50 years.

I have an earlly 90's imported Chinese SKS paratrooper. The quality on it is fairly good. They were selling them by the boatload, for about $120 back then. Shortly there after, they started cranking them out, and cheapening them up. Instead of a machined trigger group, it was stamped metal. They pinned the barrel in, instead of threads. There were some lighting cuts done away with. I had heard that the pineed in barrels would wobble and loose accuracy after a few hundred rounds.
My brother had a few Swiss rifles. From what I could see, very well made.

Just bought a Yugo M48 BO with a stamped trigger guard and floorplate. All the numbers that I can see on the gun itself match. Came with a bayonet, numbers on the hilt and the scabbard match, but do not match the gun. I think the bayonet is german. The wood on the bayonet handle and the rifle stock do not match.
Oh, BTW, did I mention that the rifle had never been fired?? Bluing inside the barrel is unscratched, and the rifling still has packing grease in it...
The gunsmith I bought it from also told me it was unfired, and he in a personal friend of mine...

Nice. You can tell if the bayo's German or not by the ring. German ones didn't have a full ring. ie the ring doesn't go all the way around the muzzle.

amosfella 08-17-2010 12:47 AM

It's a full ring bayo.
AIM surplus doesn't seem to ship ammo to Canada.... Or Kanukistan as I now call it... :(

LUVMBDiesels 08-17-2010 10:07 AM

Try Midway USA
http://www.midwayusa.com/

Otherwise, I guess you can look on gunbroker.com for somebody in Canada or who is willing to ship there.

The Yugo M48 is a great rifle! I have heard a lot of good things about it.

Hatterasguy 08-17-2010 10:46 AM

Thats a shame, they have some good deals. Midway is another really good outfit, I think they ship to Canada.

amosfella 08-17-2010 03:17 PM

Try J&G Sales in Prescott AZ. They might be able to help you out.
