Moron with Pit Bull running loose in city park last night!

I've now seen it all.

On my daily 4-mile walk early last evening broad daylight, I witnessed some guy playing fetch with his sturdy, male Pit Bull dog. I was walking on the sidewalk in a neighborhood that borders (across a city street) a nice city park. I saw this guy and his Pit Bull, maybe 60 to 70 yards away as I walked. I stared as I walked because there was NO LEASH on this known dangerous breed of dog. The guy, a tattooed and obese guy with a wifebeater-style of tank top noticed me staring as I walked. I have read that a Pit Bull has NO BOUNDARIES on what it's "yard" is. I now believe this 110%! The dog did not attack me, but 20 seconds later, I passed a nice young couple in their mid-30s walking on the sidewalk in the opposite direction, each with a nice dog on a leash. I verbally warned them that there was a guy around the corner, and way across the street in the park with an unleashed Pit Bull. They thanked me and we each continued on our way. Just 10 seconds or so later, I hear the fat guy yelling at his Pit Bull for it to come back, and I witnessed the Pit Bull at full speed closing on the couple and their little dogs. This was over half the length of a football field away, from where the Pit Bull attacked from. I changed direction toward the couple, the tiger-striped, lean, and muscular Pit Bull arrived, and savagely attacked the larger dog of the two. The man, valiantly held the leash and furiously and repeatedly was kicking the living ****** out of the Pit Bull at close quarters - a terrifying scene. His kicking did zilch and had no effect on this rabid dog. The flurry continued for what seemed an eternity - about 15-20 seconds until this big fat guy arrived, and scooped-up the rabid dog into his arms. The attacked man (not small himself) cursed the owner of the Pit Bull and the dog. I joined in cursing the dog and owner for effect. The fat, tattooed man wisely was quiet. I swear, I've heard Pit Bulls will attack anywhere, anytime, and now I believe it. Miraculously no blood was shed by the victim dog or man. We talked briefly, the young couple and I. I advised them I would call it in - I got the license number on the car they were in, and I ran (jogged) home 30 minutes to call the animal control center. I am going to follow up in the morning to make a police report on this dog and owner. It was a surreal event - but extremely sobering on what these Pit Bulls have had bred into them, and will do whenever they aren't restrained. I hope what I witnessed will put everyone on guard to them. When you see an unrestrained Pit Bull take immediate cover, or get up on an automobile, inside, or what have you - call the police immediately - get the license number / or address where you witness one of these on-the-loose. Our city has a 6' fence ordinance for any owners of this breed. Do not believe that this breed of dog will not attack you, regardless what their owner claims.

By all means call it in. People who fail to restrain their dogs should be punished.

That much being said, I've never had an issue with a pit. Other breeds yes, but never a problem with a pit. The last one I ran into unrestrained was apparently lost, as she had a collar (unfortunately without owner information) and was very well groomed. I was on my way to a party (on foot) and she followed me for a good mile. Me and a guy with a pickup ended up dropping her off where we found her, since the Humane Society was closed and I can't keep pets where I live.

Unfortunate, the Pit will probably be put down and the owner set free. Should be the other way around.

Heh!

I suppose this parallells gun control discussions. Why does anybody need a pit bull? IMHO it is simply the same reason people buy big noisy cars, trucks and bikes, large pistols and other macho thingies, to bolster their fragile male egos.

I have a friend who is a libertarian (read R) judge locally who asks this about gun control. "...so anybody can have guns, why not rocket launchers, and heavy 150 mm howitzers? ...where do you draw the line?"

We have a strong history here of people being allowed to do whatever they want to a large degree. It is a tricky freedom to cherish when you have people who don't have a lot of good judgement choosing to own very dangerous weapons or pets.

Regardless of the breed the owner should be more responsible. Watch Judge Judy.

I've been around pit bulls and brought other dogs around him.

I've never seen such a thing happen.

The dog was probably very young. I have a small snoodle that things it can attack a horse. He's only two years old and is still immature in many ways.

Personally if I saw a dog running towards mine I step in front of the two until I make sure that it's only butt sniffing going on.

I saw a report from England a few weeks ago about a growing problem with inner city thugs seeking the most vicious attack dogs possible because gun ownership is so difficult.

X2 100%

And when the owners can’t be relied upon to control their dogs, one can always rely on the little Colt Mustang+2, .380.

When I go running here in the country, I never know what I’ll come across, so it goes along too.

As for this guy and his dog. He’d be carrying his dead mutt home after getting a lecture on how I have the right to protect what’s mine. Including my dog. That yes, I’d take any court appearance to protect. Been there…Done that.

Though proven to often need a close eye, I wouldn’t be so quick to jump on the breed here however. I’ve know a few Pit owners who’s dogs were big dumb playful teddy-bears. And a few Golden Retrievers and Labs that would take a hand off if given half a chance. Both conditions could be traced back to the owners.

Cheers -
Shelby

Higher up on the "moron" list . . . parents of toddlers that bring their bundles of joy and their kid to a dog park. Then they get all defensive when their genetic material gets pounced on by someone's curious dog. Whenever I see someone bringing in human pup, my dog and I leave and wait by the fence. Nobody has enough insurance to cover the potential incident.

Pit Bulls are not legal in the UK since 1991, owning one carry a penalty for illegal possession of a banned dog of a fine of £5,000 and/or six months' imprisonment.

Other than Pit Bull other banned dogs are:
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Braziliero
  • American Staffordshire Terriers
  • Irish Staffordshire Terriers
  • Irish Blue or Red Nose

My favorite report is hearing about how they're trying to ban knives because knife crimes are way up.

Even with all of those CCTV cameras in London getting mugged with a knife is still a problem.

I met a guy who had the exact same incident in his neighborhood. A pit bull attacked another dog, except in this case the pit WOULD NOT LET GO. The guy I knew, with a couple of other people tried pulling the pit off with no luck. One guy had BOTH thumbs into the eye sockets of the pit and it still wouldn't let go. They finally beat it with a piece of lumber to get it to back off.

It would be a parallel if your gun could run off on its own and shoot somebody.

Pretty much a never ending cycle.

Take away their guns and they just get a knife. Take away their knives and they'll get an attack dog. Take away their attack dog and they'll start a hammer or something like that.
