A great weekend of cars and Mercedes pickin': 1984 Euro 500SL purchase

More photos on page 2

After a crazy week of selling 4 cars out of my new dealership I was pretty pooped going into the weekend. As a daily ritual, I always do my craigslist search for anything Mercedes to see what pops up. Yesterday afternoon was no exception, and I stumbled upon a jaw dropper. It was enough to get my second wind, load up the girlfriend and the dog in the truck and head out within the hour.

After a restful night at my parent's lakehouse about an hour from the seller, we made our way over. Chester kept the car in his hanger at the local municipal airport, which was filled to the brim with toys. Nestled next to the vintage bi-plane, in front of BMW Z4, vintage Corvette Stingray, late model Thunderbird, WWII military jeeps and transports, a completely original WWII BMW motor bike with sidecar, and a Delorean to top it all off... was this euro 500SL. The building where the hardtop was stored a few miles away housed even more toys.

Chester purchased the car from the original female owner in 1991 with 73,000 miles. He maintained the car as well as you would expect one of his airplanes, but put less than 10,000 miles on it in his 20 years of ownership, with the odometer showing only 82k. The car is in astounding original condition, and a beautiful gray, maroon color combo. Even has nearly new Pirellis on it.

The addiction continues...

Very nice!

Those cars were really something when new.

What a crop-duster style engine on that aircraft!

Talked to Chester a bit more today, and he had a great story he forgot to tell me.

The original owner of the SL replaced it in 1990 with a new Lexus. While the dealer did not offer a trade-in, they did consign the vehicle for them to sell. When the original owner started telling her friends about the SL being for sale at the dealer, one interested party went down to look. He/she reported back that the car was nowhere to be seen. When she called to check in, wondering where her car was, the manager claimed it was on a test drive. The car did not return from this test drive for over a week, at which point the she demanded the car be returned to her. Somehow the car was in wound up in Florida and had to be shipped back, and had 3000 extra miles on the odometer.

Turns out the car was being used as a drug runner from Florida to Oklahoma, and the manager of the dealership was supposedly involved, but nothing stuck. Knowing the story, Chester took the car shortly after purchasing it to the nearest police station to have it searched. While the drug dog went nuts in the trunk, nothing was located. For his troubles, though, he was sat interrogated by some detectives.

The car goes in tomorrow to address a few issues and have the fluids gone through. Then, sadly, it will be offered for sale. I'm in no hurry, though.
