Pelossi wants to investigate those who oppose the "Mosque"

As vocal as I have been in defending the Right of Muslims to build the worship center/ community center near ground zero, I find the Speaker's call for investigation way outside the bounds. She wants to use the power of intimidation of federal investigation to inhibit the free Speech of some people.

Washington Times article/blog here:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/watercooler/2010/aug/17/audio-rep-pelosi-calls-investigation-wtc-mosque-op/

It is NOT a federal matter. All federal authorities should simply shut up, and let the local authorities resolve this. This attacking of the opposition smacks of fascism--using the power of government to limit free speech. ( Everything for 'the Group'; nothing outside 'the group'--whatever 'the group' is at the present time.) Its a bad move, and I call on all supporters of Free Speech to join in criticizing her.

The Washington Times is a thoroughly discredited news source. "Blog watercooler"? Give me a break. She's taken out of context, as is the usual practice. She concluded her remarks by stating this is a local issue, and Congress needs to butt out.

Does she include herself in the "needs to butt out"?

The point she was trying to make was that the US faces real problems and the 'Mosque' issue is a red herring which amounts to nothing. She was at a press conference and was wondering why with all the things going on in the US today the first two questions she got were over a local zoning issue.

She is wondering who is funding the opposition to the Mosque, and it turns out that, according to public records, the National Republican Trust PAC is putting a lot of money into it. Please note that she was just sort of wondering aloud, said she would join those who are looking into where the funding came from and never called for an official investigation. That part of the story is just a lie.

I wonder if the right-wing controlled press will report on the PAC funding?

While you and others on the right advocate using the power of government to limit free exercise of religion, that type of opposition smacks of fascism.

Hannity and Gingrich today were stretching Pelosi's remarks as far as they could, who woulda thought? Ditto remarks above, what I read is she was curious if anyone is funding this opposition. Strikes me as pretty broadly based opposition. Pelosi does tend to stick her foot in it a bit often, I'd be happy for another Speaker, as long as it's not Boehner of the house of Orange or any other R for that matter. What, Cantor? Good lord, what a lightweight of a bobble headed dweeb.

a) the washington times is owned and run by the unification church, aka "moonies" whose leader is a convicted felon who served time. they're an evil cult, run by a man who thinks he's the reincarnation of jesus christ. perhaps a more credible source would help your argument.

b) since some killers of abortion providers have been christians, and members of christian churches, i propose that no christian churches be built within 5 miles of any doctors office, health clinic or hospital. (how ridiculous does that sound?)

This "mosque on a memorial-style type of grounds" argument is somewhat analogous to the National Socialist Party of America wanting to hold a rally/parade in Skokie, IL. back in 1977/1978.

It's being done to prove some type of point, a point I find hard to grasp or understand its full reason.

At this time, there are MANY LOCAL CITIZENS that don't want anything related to Islam to be near the area.

But, as usual, (pardon the pun) those that don't have a dog in the fight think they know better than those that live, breathe, eat and work in the area.

And we, the rest of the "outsiders" are doing our best to keep the flames roaring higher and higher by weighing in where angels fear to tread.

Good luck to us.

this is america.

i despise all religions, because i think they are all scams that prey on people, and indoctrinate them. but that doesn't mean diddly.

if this country wants to portray itself as the "land of the free", with religious freedom for all, and freedom of expression etc. then the mosque people should be able to build the mosque anywhere they d*(& well please. you can't have "religious freedom", say, 87% of the time. or when you happen to be in the mood. it's a rare, true, black/white issue.

the "local control" issue is just a retread of the "states' rights" angle, used to defend such noble, "local" customs as slavery and segregation.

remember - i think muslims are idiots, who believe in some silly old fairy tales. however, they should be able to bow to mecca, from anywhere they
wish.

otherwise, just cancel the bill of rights tomorrow.

If the city of NY or whatever Port Authority Entity has any power, let them exercize it to their fullest potential.

If there are zoning laws and rules, let them either be obeyed or rescinded.

Better yet...let those that live in the middle of it be the ones that make the final decision.

Personally, I believe all religions need to stay out of the area. Lower Manhattan, for some reason, doesn't scream "religious" to me anyways.

Why pour salt and vinegar on wounds that haven't healed and may not for at least another two or three generations?

Give it time.

Muhammad died a few years ago...I'm sure he can wait a few more years before another mosque is thrown up in the infidels' faces.

And the Jesus crew? They've got St. Peter's down the block a ways. They should be happy as clams.

And as for "O" pontificating? Let him head south to the land of crawdads and leaking caps. This Muslim thing's not becoming of him.

EXCUSE ME--you have the wrong person in your rant. I have been quite consistent in avoiding any sort of the thing. I have been vocal in my criticism of those, particularly on the right, who want to use the power of government to veto the so-called " Ground Zero Mosque".

1. The Washington Times, seriously?

2. These people don't need to be investigated, they need to be ignored.

The Washington Times is a bad joke, but I think that Speaker Pelosi was quoted accurately. How someone could achieve the level of political success that she has achieved and still say something that stupid is beyond me. There is a lot to admire in Pelosi, but every now and then she says something like this. It's infuriating.
