Could be nice. A nice small 2.2L Diesel truck on the market again. Maybe GM and Ford will come to and sell us diesel Rangers and Canyons.

I got some FB from a pal in OZ where Mahindra has been in the market for 2 years.

Purchase price is high for what you get
Fit finish and quality os low range
Factory support(training of techs, availability of quick FB on issues, etc) is sub par
US Dealer network is mostly dealers who DO NOT SELL TRUCKS for a living!
(Do you really want to deal with a guy who doesn't know trucks?)!
Availability of spare parts (OZ dealers have had an issue with getting spares in a reasonable period of time)
Orphan syndrome - judging from the US importer's history-do you want to own an orphan?
Crashworthyness-judging from what I saw in India/China-Nuff said!

Gimme the Brazilian or Thailand Ranger-Quad cab, long bed, either Ethanol or Diesel engine powered.

If it lives up to the hype I'd consider one. The improved mileage and cargo capacity are very interesting.

If they price it right truck buyers will look past the so so interior and looks for what it offers, I would.


GM and Ford really need diesel half tons.

They are going to have to price them below $16k. I can get a brand new Silverado 1500 WT for $16,800 and its more truck than these.

If they'd price them for what used to be the Chevy LUV/Ford Courier/Mazda B2000 market - just a small simple basic work truck, and not a mall cruiser like every other small truck has turned into - they'd have a winner on their hands.

OTOH, if the reports from OZ are correct, perhaps the EPA gave them approval because they knew it was a moot point and they'd never pass safety testing and actually go on sale. An actual alternative to those holier-than-thou hybrids? Heaven forbid!!!

There are some pretty persistant rumors that that will be the next-generation Ranger in the US, but I haven't heard anything solid and it will probably just have the ecoboost 4cyl instead of the diesel people want.

As far as LUV/Courier/D50 are concerned, they actually only cost a few hundred less than a full size pickup, and in some cases cost more. The appeal was for commuters who needed a pickup occasionally, and could trade off hauling capacity for parking space and fuel economy (although the F100 Economy of 81-82 was actually rated at 30mpg, while the 81-82 Courier was rated at 29-31).

I'd really like a little diesel truck, it would be just about perfect for 90% of what I do. Most of the time I'm running around town and get about 17 which isn't to bad, but 10-13mpg more would be nice. With the cost difference between regular and diesel that kind of increase would still make sense.

Although maintenance is a concern, I have a hard time believing a motor could be cheaper to keep going than my 4.3. Modern gas motors are damn near maintenance free, just a set of plugs every 100k miles and oil when the OLM tells you to. Plus parts are dirt cheap, and easy to change out. A diesel isn't going to be much better, especially with all that complicated emissions crap on it.
