Cars in Brazil
So I am back from Brazil! Miss me???! ^_^
But anyway, not the point of the thread. While I was there, I actually started noticing the different types of cars they have there. I tried to get pictures, but I didn't always have a camera with me that was working. Sadly. Of the different types, I saw these: Okay, so those are only 2. Citroen and Fiat. But there were a LOT of them. There were other different types, but I cannot really remember them all at the moment. I do remember Renault and Peugeot, but there was a 3rd that I have never seen before but cannot remember. Of course they had many of the same cars we use here as well. Ford, VW, Toyota, Audi(not too many of these), Chevy, Mazda, Honda, Infiniti...and probably many more thant I just didn't notice since they have them here and I see them all the time anyway. The most common car I saw was this one: I wonder why I think of JohnM. ^_^ Of course his were better taken care of than the ones I saw in Brazil. In all honesty, when you get a car in Brazil, you KEEP it. They have a lot of busses, everyone is walking, using bikes, and there are plenty of motorcycles. There are more cars being sold than parking spots, so going anywhere and trying to find a place to park is just incredibly annoying. Plus, yes, cars in the US are expensive, but for a country full of poor people, buying a car must be such a difficult thing. I was in line at a store where my mother overheard some lady saying it took her 3 years to save up for a microwave, and will have to save up for 5 years to get a TV. Not EVERYONE who lives there has that problem, but it seems like it can be very common. So those old bugs are there. EVERYWHERE. If I was playing "punch buggy" with someone, I can see that both of us would end up with REALLY bruised arms. About Mercedes, though, I was not expecting to see one. MAYBE just one. Honestly. However, I was proven wrong in my assumption. By a million miles. I saw that Mercedes Benz symbol VERY often. Buses and trucks. I was happy to find out that in the area I was staying, Brazil trusted Mercedes Benz to represent the most important vehicles. As I said, LOTS of public transportation, so buses are a necessity, and of course many trucks. But along with MB, there were also VW and Volvo trucks. The buses had different kinds as well, but I didn't catch what it was. At one point we even drove by where they manufacture some of the vehicles, but it was at night, and we were driving really fast. So this was the best picture I could get: I also believe The Clk Man, as well as many others, will appreciate two of their favorite things in one. Beer and Mercedes. Perfect >_< I don't drink beer, so I have no idea how good the stuff was. But I figured maybe Hattie or Clk Man or someone might know *shrug* I suppose there would have been more pictures, but, again, camera issues. I hope you all enjoy! |

I remember, back in the 70s, I think, a Brazilian made a mid engined 8 cylinder rally car out of a beetle with two VW engines coupled together with a flipped transaxle. the engine resided where the back seat used to be. Unbelievably fast, ultimate sleeper race car. way cool...

Mercedes used to, and possibly still do, have a manufacturing plant in Brazil.

Wow! nice trip. I have always wanted to visit South America, in particular-Belize. Did you happen to notice if any of the petrol filling stations included the 'Caltex' brand?

Ooh. Never been to Belize! You really should go! And then come back and tell us all about it!!! And, of course, take pictures if possible. I am afraid I did not notice that. I kept wanting to take a picture of the prices and types of fuel they had because it was very amusing. Some-odd percent alcohol in one of them and another was natural gas...VERY noisy when filling the tank. If you want, I can ask my mother to e-mail my relatives and ask about Caltex. Why would you like to know?

Ahh I wish we would see more MB trucks in the US.
I've been spying MB branded Sprinters which is always a nice surprise.

Good pics. I spent time there quite a few years ago. Wonderful country.
For the record Chilcutt, if you're visiting South America, you'll be hard pressed to find Belize, it's 1200 or more miles away

i think they started using corn based? ethanol in brazil ten or twenty years ago?
actually, wiki says thirty plus years ago. seems to work for them, in the self sustaining / reduced oil imports dept. , but... its still adds to the global temperature (unless you think that's all some evil plot by all gore and .. well, some eviler scientists?) of course "lula" is friends with the iranians and hugo chavez, so they do have good sources for importation... until the u.s. invades from those bases in colombia? or israel bombs iran? or the united states bombs everyone? (wow, i should be quiet now. sorry) welcome back, ms. drezell. when are you getting that first benz?

Hmm...still in production, or no? And I did not see any, personally. I suppose if I looked at EVERY car we passed I might have seen more MB than I did...

Sadly, I think I'll get my first benz as my 2nd car...and I'll get my 2nd car after I get my first car...which is after I get enough money for one >.< Currently playing around with my dad's car. And I really dislike it. It's a hyundai(which I hate) and its a station wagon (which I also hate). Oh, and back on track, I'll probably get enough money for my own car when I have a JOB TT_TT *cry* I'm so pathetic. But one thing's for sure. No matter what I drive...I will NEVER drive in Brazil. That place is MAD scary/crazy to drive in. Edit: no cornbased, ...sugarcane. Fulcrum is correct.

Well, again, I'm sorry I don't know, but if I found out I will let you know! And I never tried to notice that on a clock in a movie. Now I have the urge to do so!

I was in Salvador-Bahia two years ago. Beautiful place. The cars you pictured are common in Salvador. Saw few C and E class MBs but most belong to the rich (IMHO).
Their public transportation buses are mostly MBs. Most of their buses and trucks are manusfatured(?) assembled and built right in Brazil. The hotel where I stayed (Bahiamar) have cars that you can rent privately. For group sightseeing, they mostly use/hire MB branded sprinters/freightliners - very common in Salvador-Bahia. Welcome back Drezel....:-)
