Todays mini road trip

I have been wanting to take the new car out on a road trip test for a little bit, today the better half and I got a late start and decided we still wanted out of the city.. Perfect! We loaded up the 300E 2.6 with a few items (jackets, sandwich, etc) and hit the road. Stop #1 Sonic for some Rout 44 drinks. Now we are off, as we put the first tape in the radio (Heck yeah, I said tape. I still have them) and talked while cruising down the highway I just smiled, the first non work commute test! We did a 250 mile or so loop, nothing major but good enough for a test run. We left our place in Castle Rock and went up I-70 where I found out she can do 80 MPH up that pass.. Whoops, I slowed down when I saw that. I am not used to passing others on that road at all. From there we went to over Berthoud Pass. While up top we met a great couple who were traveling where ever the road leads in their 1985 VW Vaanagon Westfalia. Really a great couple that we talked to for the better part of an hour. We left from there into the town of Winter Park, and I didn't have my bike. I felt that I had cheated myself. We hung out there for a short time till we thought "What about Grand Lake?" Off we went cruising the new ride in the beautiful Colorado mountains. We arrive at Grand Lake a little hungry so we walked the downtown stretch and had dinner. Afterwards we went to the lake front, hung out and just enjoyed the evening. As the sun started to set we returned. With the one exception of the BMW on hwy 6 driving like a drunk it was a spectacular day, we were both glad we went! It was also great the the car did so well and did it all on only 1/2 a tank. I think we have a new road trip car when the weather is good!

There is more to the story but I have rambled enough, enjoy the pics!

A little pull off by a waterfall hike on Berthoud Pass

Nice... I love the Berthoud pass/Winter Park/Grandby area... we live in Westminster and go there often in both summer and winter. It's also great to do a big loop accross the Trail Ridge Road (summer only, as you know) and come home thorugh Estes Park.

THx for sharing - looks like a fun car.

We often do a loop of Berthoud Pass/Winter Park to Kremmling. Then HWY 9 to Lake Dillon and back down 70. Once in awhile we will also go through Breck over Hoosier down HWY 24 into Colorado Springs and back. Always beautiful!
