Applied for my passport book today

Plan is to leave for Singapore by mid-january.. After seeing the econamists report that jobs will begin returning to the U.S by 2015. Idecided to try my luck somewhere else. There will be adjustments on my part,,, the main issues are learning about all of the laws there. Seems that in Singapore the laws are much ,much stricter than here in america. Drug traffikers.. rapists,, kidnappers.. being caught with a gun.. all result in being sent to the gallows. Wont be a p[ronlem for me .. as I do not fall into any of the aforementioned categorys.. Has Anybody been to Singapore?? Tell me about it.

Chew lots of gum, they really like minty fresh breath there!

Miss Singapore just resigned her crown after credit card thefts and lingerie buying spree!

Don't spit chewing gum anywhere in public. It might even be illegal to chew gum in public. They also have zero tolerance for any drugs and don't like it when you criticize the govt. Otherwise it's a pretty clean and civilized place to live. Supposedly great health care too, though aklim will disagree with me. Oh yeah, and if you don't like it hot and humid all year, you will suffer.

Chil- can you not get a job in your field here in the US? Culturally, Singapore might be a bit of shocker...

Just be careful when you dump them. The loyalty is a double-edged sword.

To my knowledge plenty of Americans have worked in Singapore. It's a major hot spot for expats. Our peach forum is far from being representative of America.

My experience

I lived in Singapore for 18 months as an expat.

1) It is a 'fine' city. More fines to penalize you than anywhere else in the world.
2) Flush the toilet after using it. You will be fined if not
3) Cars are very expensive. Not worth keeping a car. Need to pay extra to drive into the CBD ( Central Business District ) every time Mon-Fri.
4) No graffiti, will be caned
5) Small quantity of chewing gum for personal use only when you go through airport.
6) No littering
7) Whole place is as flat as pancake.
8) Santosa Island, main tourist spot
9) There is a new Casino ( not sure it is finished yet ) for foreigners only. No locals welcome.
10) Orchard Road, main tourist spot and night life.
11) It is an interesting place to visit but not to live for a long time.
12) Clean, low crime rate ( as expected ), peaceful. Singaporean people are friendly but very nationalistic.
13) Hot and Exotic food.
14) Hot and humid as others have mentioned. A/C is a must at home.

Enjoy and good luck.

The healthcare is great as long as you can pay for a private doctor. Most of the more talented ones are in private practice after having earned further qualifications from here or England. Otherwise, STFU and worship the govt near-freebie doctor or he will make your life miserable. His word is law and you best not argue.

BTW, Singapore won't allow dual citizenship unlike what we have here. So, if you move there permanently, citizenship wise, you will have to give up the one here. The good news is that the wife and I made 2 more spots available for you by dumping ours.

BTW, don't pee in the elevators as they have special sensors to detect them, so they say. If you can, try an experiment for me. Pee in a bag and toss it into the HDB elevators and see if they will detect pee and lock you in it. Obviously, you will be outside when that happens. I have to ask someone to do this because I don't know when I will go there again. I know I have 2 more visits at sometime in the future because I currently have 2 living parents there and they will die sometime.

There's a difference between loyalty and oppression.

US does not allow dual citizenship. They just never ask or enforce it.

Muslim rule dictates every part of Malaysia. Also google Bumiputera. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumiputera_%28Malaysia%29 If you think black people have it bad here, they ain't seen nothing yet.

If you believe asian women are, in general, more loyal than American women, you will believe that pigs fly there too. They are not any more or less loyal to their spouses. You will find that they have the same issues there as here. Slightly different flavor, perhaps but the meat and bones will be similar.
